Is there any compatible settings guide to make modern XVID streams playable on old KiSS MPEG4/DivX Players?
Sorry, I couldn't find anything on "KiSS" in XVID forum.
I have KiSS DP-450, first one from mpeg4 series. A few years ago most XviD movies vere compatible with it. But something has changed sinse then. Player displays a blank screen. Sometimes I see FOURCC error, but think it could be solved with a compatible header. But what to do with a blank screen and frozen timer? (player doesn't hang, just tries to seek infinitely) I can't understant, what limitations in VFW config do I need to do to maintain highest possible playable quality for this player?
I encode interlaced PAL streams in VDUBMOD with Xvid-1.1.3-28062007 Final. I do not use Q-pel.

I don't know if I understand you 100%
are you talking about XviD compression settings from witch the output will be compatible with your Xvid old_KISS player ?
if yes.___
NOTE: I don't own a KISS player anymore since they suck big time but my first divx player was KISS so, maybe I can help.
---Quarter Pixel: (QPEL) OFF (wont work)
---Global Motion Compression: (S-frames) OFF (wont work)
---BVops: OFF (wont work even without packed bitstream)
Because I've made many-many encodes back when I had a KISS
I can tell you that all other settings are acceptable (by the player) and up to you to choose if/when and how you will use them.
*If you are still having problems I don't think it's from the codec's settings...
EDIT: It just came to me sorry... I now remember having the same issue... black screen/frozen etc. so it was because of the b-frames
DON'T use them, at least the old KISS can only play p-frames.
Or you can buy a new one --even with 50$ today you can find a player witch will be able to play EVERYTHING (QPEL, packed bit., etc)
times r changing... so should we ;)

THANKS Again!
There really were 2 B-frames in config.
I've set 1 Bframe, no pack. bitstream, (Advanced simple @4 profile) and MPEG2 matrix, adaptive quant. 2000bps. Everything worked well with Interlaced encoding.

YES-YES
now I remeber even more (it was several years ago)...
you could only use 1 max -bframe...
but I decided not to put any bframes because even with 1 the playback was jerky (still KISS couldn't handle it well).
