I'm not new to VD, but i also am not an avid user. Just a occasional user for the past several years. so i'm not very knowledgeable as you'll see by my question. If i use VD to edit a divx video, how can i save the video w/o changing anything other than the edit i made? In other words, i don't want to save it as a avi or with a different codec or anything else. Just whatever edit i made so the file is otherwise exactly the same. I do realize i would first have to choose the divx codec in the compression setting. But then when i go to save it the only option is "save as avi", but i not only want the divx codec, but also the divx extention/container.

just select on Video "Direct Stream Copy", in this way no reencoding is done, will just applyed your cuts

dazco, there is no such thing as "DivX" video! And there is no such thing as a "DivX" conatiner! DivX is a (proprietary) piece of software, it's not a video standard! The video format produced by the DivX Software (Codec) is called "MPEG-4 ASP". Xvid produces exactly the same video format! It's just a different Encoder Software to create the same type of Video. Also AVI is a commonly used container to store MPEG-4 ASP video - No matter whether it was created by DivX, Xvid or another Encoder. Filenames and Extensions are just conventions, they don't say anything about the actual content of a file! AVI files usually have a .avi extension, which is the "correct" extension. AVI's containing MPEG-4 ASP video created by DivX sometimes have a .divx extension (e.g. videos downloaded from Stage6), but that doesn't change the fact that those are AVI files! It's just marketing of the DivX Company! You should rename those files to .avi to fix the "wrong" extension. So be careful and don't mix up "Video Format", "Codec/Encoder" and "File Extension". Those are three completely different things and those terms are often used in an inappropriate way! If you open your "DivX created" vidoe file (MPEG-4 ASP video stored in an AVI container), choose the "Direct Stream Copy" mode and save it back to AVI, you should get exactly what you want...

@dazco

Please explain what you intend to do in the way of editing.

If it's only cutting out parts, then follow the information provided by "buzzqw".

However, if you're intending to do other editing (resizing, applying filters, etc.), you will not be able to use "Direct Stream Copy" and will have to re-encode...

Sometimes, .divx is more than .avi.

If your .divx file contains menu or subtitles, you'll lose them after saving from virtualdub. No tool a this moment can preserve menu or subtitles if you want to edit a .divx file.
If you don't have/care about subtitles use the buzzqw advice. After saving as avi, you can rename it again to .divx if you want.

enjoy,

Thanks all. As i said, i'm not new to VD but i'm also not a knowledgeable user. Just casual, so this helped a lot to understand whats going on here. And yes, i DO also edit other things than cutting out sections or amending files. So i guess i will just keep on saving as and use the avi extention. Unless of course DSC is faster. Then i'd use that when cutting.
