I have an original DVDs collection of Avatar the last Airbender, and while majority of content is coded correctly there are about 10 out of 40 movies that originally were written the wrong way.
EdgeFine.jpg attachment show how edges look in majority of cases (fine), check the hat.
EdgeBad.jpg shows some meager mind at work of coding the content :-(
EdgeBad2.jpg shows another kind of artefact - a "dashed" edge
EdgeBad3.jpg - .... no words can describe it!!! (try to scale it to full screen size)
These stills are taken prior to deinterlacing, they represent the original DVD picture. Bad ones are the same being viewed in VirtualDubMod, MeGUI AviSynth creator, nVidia pureVideo player, MPC+FFDShow. And what's sadistic - there are short bad sections inside good ones... Of course every imperfection being magnified to a 1600x1200 22" monitor just gets sooo worse.
Currently I'm using MeGUI x264 codec to compile an ideal backup (10 DVDs to 1), so since 75% of contents is just perfect I decided to try to improve other clips as much as possible.
I wonder what can I do to conceal such artefacts...
