View Full Version : MP4 manually mux VobSubs Nero Digital SP > Standalone - Impossible?? Help!

Hello everyone,

I have read a good deal by now and have also found the hint (latest posts from beginning of 2007) that so far no one has achieved this:

Create working VobSub-subtitles, prepare Video and Audio-sources respectively (being careful to comply to Nero Digital Standard Profile specs), get a chapter-file according to ogg-format, put all these into YAMB/MP4Box, let it do the muxing and have this file played by the Nero-certified DVD Player.

I HAVE finshed numerous results, which would play just fine, but NEVER would the subtitles be displayed on my standalone, although they are recognized by the player - Nero Showtime displays them though!

After all this time (earliest posts stem from as early as 2003!) has no one solved this problem? Or am I just to dumb to find the solution here or anywhere...?

Any help or hint would be greatly appreciated!

Note: I did a short clip with Recode 2 with subs, which was nicely playable AND the subs were displayed as well on the standalone.
When - to test this - I took that short clip, extracted files with YAMB and muxed those identical files again with YAMB, again the subtitles wouldn't show up!!
So presumably there is something missing/going wrong in the muxing process ...?

MP4 was not meant to contain vobsubs but only TTXT (timed text subs). Nero implemented vobsubs as private streams though, and they're close to be out of standard.
I dont know if 3rd party apps allow to mux vobsubs in MP4 but i know for sure vobsubs in MP4 is a Nero "almost-proprietary" thing.

YAMB (with the aid of MP4box) will let you mux IDX/SUB files (VOBsubs) into the .MP4 container.

They work reasonably okay with my NeroDigital certified/compatible players. Encoded at pixel frame sizes of 720x408/576....

Cheers

if you have used some ND profiles to create those files, you have to tweak muxing process by enabling the appropriate brand-name (via Properties button in Yamb)...

:thanks: guys for those fast answers!

Yes, I tried again (and had before) to enter the brand name. To no avail: subs are recognized correctly, I can even turn them on/off (no error saying 'no subtitles available' or similar), but they don't show up...

Should I fill out every possible field that appears in 'Properties'? I haven't troubled so far, but might empty property-tags/fields cause this problem?

Thanks again, perhabs this may be solved yet.

EDIT: perhabs some of you who got a working solution, would post their exact setup (or screenshot...) in the respective fields? EDIT

could you post a sample from Recode2 containing the subs...I'll try to do something tonight.

The weird thing is: it works for SMD but not for you...:-/ which device do you have exactly ?

@kurtnoise13

Thank you for taking such active interest!! As you are YAMB's developer, it's just great. :)

So here the short Recode 2 sample (Recode v. 2.5.5.0). But did you mean the original Reccode-file or rather the one I muxed again with YAMB...?
I include both (Download (http://www.barzgaran.de/files/Samples.rar), 10 MB, ~ 30 sec. each*), they are short clips of a DVD-backup, the image was cropped incorrectly, 'cause I re-encoded for testing purposes from an already encoded file. But as I said, original Recode subs worked, YAMB's version... (v. 2.0.0.8)

My device: a bargain rather, manufactured by Targa, which recently became 'Silvercrest', Model DP-5400x. Some information may be found here: Test Lidl-Silvercrest (http://www.hdtv-praxis.de/modules.php?op=modload&name=PagEd&file=index&topic_id=2&page_id=457&ppart=9).
Explanations are German, but the table of tested and working/non-working formats is in English. Perhabs that will give a hint. I haven't yet tried to find out which chipset is used.

Note: Both samples have subs, BOTH show up on the PC (Nero Showtime!), but YAMB's don't on the standalone...

*Too long perhabs? Hope, size is no problem?

Okay, I've just tried both samples with my Ziova CS505....

The "Recode" clip's subtitles look okay and are a clean white colour

The "YAMB/MP4box" clip's subtitles are visible but they're green, not white. Same with MediaPlayer Classic too.

if the problem it's just the bad color, you just need to grab a recent MP4box build...this has been fixed (at least the build from my website).

I just tested a demux-remux with your sample here and the sub color is correct.

I just tested a demux-remux with your sample here and the sub color is correct.Yep, you're right. With a straight forward "re-mux" the colour issue is resolved :). However, I've just checked the VOBsubs "Playtime" in MediaInfo v0.7.5.6 and it's gone up to 31s 655ms (from 30s 383ms) :(

Plus, if you completely de-mux all the streams in the "Recode_clip" and then re-mux them, the VOBsubs "Playtime" goes up to 33s 443ms.

Are you able to confirm?

I'll have a look tonight but does it occur also with or without the sub remuxed ?

You're right about the colors of course, it's the same on my system.

But the - inexplicable? - fact remains that my standalone does not show the second variety at all, not green or anything.

I had my own clips properly encoded and muxed with YAMB, where the subs looked fine (incl. the colors) on my system, but still recognized yet invisible on the standalone.

Any ideas? Will I have to wait for a firmware update that just might happen...

Should I find out about the standalone's chipset or something? Change my settings? I'd so like to know where/what the problem really is...

I've never looked at the duration yet. I'll try and get back to you.

Should I find out about the standalone's chipset or something? Change my settings? I'd so like to know where/what the problem really is... It will most probably be Zoran Vaddis 888 chip-set, which is very well featured.

If anything it will be the players firmware that may require tweaking.

Unlike with software based players, these sorts of issues can be quite difficult to get to the bottom of with hardware devices :(

Can I get such software anywhere? Is it advisable to try?

Well, I hoped someone could suggest anything... How would I go about it now?

Can I get such software anywhere? Is it advisable to try?Official player firmwares (from any player manufacturer) are often quite slow to appear.

Indeed, I can't find any information what-so-ever about the 5400x on SilverCrest's web site... Let alone firmware.

Well, I hoped someone could suggest anything... How would I go about it now?Don't get too despondent. All observations regarding YAMB/MP4box and hardware device/player compatibility are most important. We need as many people as possible with hardware devices to help experiment with revised MP4box builds ;)

Solutions though, may take a little time to come to fruition.

Well, this Silvercrest (http://www.service.targa.de/auswahl.php?lang_id=1&typeid=10&brand_id=2&producttype=Silvercrest+Produkte&picture=Silvercrest_frontSilber.jpg) is a rather new brand of the former manufacturer/distributor "TARGA (http://www.targa.de/)"... On their homepage one finds general information, handbooks, etc. but no firmware-upate, which might be soon to expect, as this player-model was first offered for sale on 29th Nov 2007...

Thanks for those kind words, I will certainly wait... and hope. :)
