I have been using Nero 6 Startsmart (Express - OEM version) for sometime and usually if there are any problems with the system or burners it shows up in Nero. Recently, both burners (2) are showing limited burn/write speeds?

In DVD Copy mode I have speeds of Max, 2.4x, 2x & 1x for both burners. In CD Copy mode I have on the Master burner (HL-DT-ST-DVD+-RW-GSA-H21NA105): 48x, 40, 24 & 16; and the Slaver burner (Lite-On DVDRW-SHW-160P65-PSOB): 48x, 40, 32, 24, 16, 12, 10 & 8x.

Have updated the Nero 6 (clean install) and still no change in write speeds for both CD & DVD. No error messages re DMA, etc.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong?

My system is a Windows XP Media 2005 (Rollup 2) (NVIDIA 6800, ATI Theater 550 Pro-TV Tuner, NVIDIA PureVideo Decoders).

Hi!

There are never any error messages generated by the programs regarding DMA.

You have to go into the Control Panel and in the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), open the IDE Controllers and see if they're set to PIO mode. if so,you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to "DMA if available"...

Again thanks for the info.

I've checked the device manager and it is in DMA mode for both drivers.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

1)Are you sure that your installation of NERO wasn't actually a time-limited demo version that is crippled (as to burn speed) after 30days?

2) Try using (freeware) IMGBurn instead of NERO...

Hello again Setarip_old:

Was originally an OEM Version of Nero 6 Express (Startsmart) and updated via Nero's website within the Nero 6 family. You have a point about it not being a full version and/or package. It's possible.

Will try your suggestion of IMGBurn -- freeware instead.

Thanks a bunch,
