Hi,

A new year has started, so why not created a new poll ? :)

Now that Matroska has jumped into hardware devices, that mp4 tools are more and more developped and HD materials begin cheaper, what is the container you have prefered to use the last year ? do you still use it in 2008 or do you plan to switch to an other one ?

All in all, this kind of poll can be interesting to have some tendencies...So, lets talk about the D9 community.

I'm Matroska all the way baby :D I think I'll stick to it for a (very) long time

I like Matroska the best. Although I wish there were more tools to support cutting and splitting it.

Still Matroska.

MP4 as it can handle H.264 (or Xvid) and AAC which I use a lot for my encoding. Matroska is good also, but less in use for mobile devices, at least those devices I have at home. :D

As for a poll it should have something about what kind of splitter and renderer that in use as a container is not much worth without support from these parts in a filter chain.

Haali splitter+Renderer work best for me on MP4.

Big :thanks: to Haali for his work!

MP4 container as it has been adopted by standard devices.

If Matroska is supported in most of the Standalone players or Portable Media Players, then I'll vote for MKV!

Still Matroska.
+1

because I need the ability to mux ac3 or dts.

Edit: but this will maybe change as soon as I get my Popcorn Hour (http://popcornhour.com/) and if 1080p Matroska-Files with high bitrates show problems with software decoding.
TS is supported in hardware decoding though :)

Matroska, can't beat its versatility! But the fact that the majority of device manufacturers choose to overlook this fully open, well documented spec is unnerving, to say the least...

Matroska, no doubt.

Depends on what I'm doing. For myself and my rich content needs - which is the lion's share - I use Matroska. I use MP4 when dealing strictly with audio (since I use AAC 99% of the time), compatibility video encodes without subtitles, and if the stream is ASP, then just to mess with people that have the notion in their heads that MP4 always equals H.264 (which, for that matter, I could also do in MKV by using MPEG-4 ASP Native mode) - whether it would really matter, considering computer hardware and the widespread usage of libavcodec-based decoders these days, is up for debate.

I don't have any reason or desire to switch. If I use another one then it'll probably be due to the task requiring something special to work right, but I can't really foresee what such tasks would be.

MP4 all the way! Used to like MKV two years back but standard adoption of MP4 led me the other way. Cant see much future of MKV in hardware devices now that MP4 is so widely adopted.
Plus for MP4, there are more user-friendly tools than MKV, like Nero Recode (my fav) and Quicktime.

AVI for me.

I primarily use XviD and AC3 for my TV show encodes, and AVI continues to work well for me. Someday if the need exists, I will explore Matroska. VirtualDub is just too good at reworking my AVIs when I need to, and I hear that the Matroska tools are not as capable. As my AVI files get bigger though, I may run into more problems, at which point I might start to use Matroska instead. We'll see what I say in the 2009 poll...

Matroska is the only container able to handle all the stream types I need. Hey, I’ve been using it exclusively since back in 2003 and never had any problems. Why switch?

Hm, Matroska leading the poll with 64%. Nice. But hardly surprising since we’re in the “New and alternative a/v containers” forum.

Aaah Rats!
Wasn't going to vote.
Looked at the last 12 months work.

MP4. (By a fair margin.)

I use MP4 but I would love to switch to Matroska.
The only thing that prevent me from using it is because with the current multiplexer (mkvmerge) the Cues Section are put at the end of the file.

WMV, it streams to my xbox 360 ever so nicely (no 4GB barrier)!

When I have a choice, definitely Matroska.

I use AVI, MP4, and others because I have to.

I love Matroska, even though all my encodes mostly consist of MPEG4-ASP and AAC Sound. Sure, there's occassionally a embeded SRT but MP4 could handle that aswell I believe, still i think mkv is superior in many ways...

Once again we will prove it is a Matroska forum.
