View Full Version : Converting Blu-ray to HD-DVD or vice-versa

Blu-ray and HD-DVD use the exact same codecs. The only real difference is the file structure and the laser frequency.

While Blu-ray ADVERTISES more storage space per disk, the actual bit-rate of most videos is exactly the same for both formats. So the videos and features for both disks are actually the same.

So, does anyone know if a non-recompressing conversion function is being developed?

Basically, the initial format would be read in, file structure converted for the secondary format, then the new file format could be burned to the second format for use with no change in video quality, just a change in file structure so that the original features work in the second format.

Yes it is possible with expensive tools like scenarist :) There is no one click remux solution yet.

Too bad. I have the Adobe suite. Not scenarist. And Adobe (for now) is Blu-ray only. Oh well, Guess I'll just wait and see what develops over the next few months.

Thanks!

While Blu-ray ADVERTISES more storage space per diskNot anymore, HDDVD now have triple layer disk with capacity of around 51GB :).

Blu-ray and HD-DVD use the exact same codecs. The only real difference is the file structure and the laser frequency. well no, they use same codecs but with realy different (AVC, VC-1, MPEG2) profiles with different buffers, which isn't compactible with other standard and vice versa.

There isn't possible to only change container without recompressing or tweaking, because HDDVD and BluRay standards only look similar, but they aren't

Are you SURE they are different? I have read several reviews where the tester said the videos were the exact same data rate, etc. (I'll see if I can find them and post links later)

And, if the framerate, resolution, codec, etc. are the same, the other variations should not stop the video from playing. There are dozens of DVD encoders, all with different matrices, and the ability to change the number of N-frames, open/close GOPs, etc. and every variation plays on a DVD player (most anyway).

So (at least theoretically), a VC1 video from a BR disc should play perfectly fine on a HD Player, as long as the file structure and file naming conventions are recognized by the player's chipset. But, I only have HD-DVD, so I can't test this for myself.

No one touch conversion tool yet. You were correct...the same codec and bitrates but different file structures. I sure it's a matter of time before someone come up with a quicky conversion tool.
