I've a video and audio stream I tried to mux but avimux only offers to save them as .mkv but I need an avi.

I know avimux behaves like this when the streams are not compatible with the avi container but the video is in xvid and the audio in mp3 so this should cause the problem.

Any tips on how to get an avi?

What’s the Xvid’s container? If it’s Matroska already it might be stored as a native MPEG-4 stream that’s not compatible with AVI.

The xvid is embedded in an AVI.

Maybe you know another tool which I can use to mux the streams? I can't use VDub as the audio has vbr and I don't know any other.

bye,

EDIT

Silly me, I tried it with Nandub and everything worked fine. But I'm still wondering why avimux doesn't work.

Good question. With Xvid-AVI and MP3 it should work. Nandub is fine for VBR MP3 muxing. But don’t use it for cutting, especially not for AC3. VirtualDubMod has all the audio features of Nandub and none of its problems.

I recently noticed the same thing. I had an AVI which I'd originally muxed with VirtualDubMod which had problematic playback on my standalone player, and I wanted to re-mux it using the MP3 VBR profil for standalones in AVI-Mux GUI. For some reason it only gave me the option to output MKV.
