Scratched dvd workaround?

Greetings,
I'm revenuer, i've been lurking here for a couple of years, even before i registered. Anyway.........

I've got an unencrypted movie that i cannot backup. I have to get this movie backed up to my hdrive. It gets to 85% using dvdshrink and then i get the dreaded cyclic error whatever thingy warning. So then i thought, maybe i could used dvddecrypter and skip read errors (if i understand this correctly, cause i'm not sure i do :))
Still cannot get it to my hdd. The dvd has a small scratch on it. Really pisses me off.

Is there any workaround? Isnt there a program that could just skip that bad area or something? Maybe i could change the settings in dvddecrypter? What about one of those "isoprograms"? I don't want to get real technical w/ this movie, i 'm fairly limited to those "one click" type programs, but i would try. Any suggestions? I need a workaround please.

This is the simple approach I use when asked to recover files from faulty DVD discs. We must have done dozens of them by now.

No fancy stuff just a basic approach.

You say you can rip the DVD until it gets to 85%, so save that and open the resulting vobs with a simple editor I use VideoReDo Plus, select the vobs by holding the shift key and clicking them. Choose "combine" check what you have then save it, this will be an mpeg 2 file which can be used in any DVD authouring app.

Then see which vob is where the ripping is interrupted, (could have say 4 vob files something like this):
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB

For the sake of argument let's say the 85% stops on VTS_01_3.VOB, then it is very likely that
VTS_01_4.VOB is undamaged, so start decrypter in file mode but this time only select VTS_01_4.VOB

Open this in VideoReDo and you can see what video you have, if the section that is damaged is not too important you could simply edit the files together using the "combine" option when opening the files in VideoReDo.

If you need to recover the damaged section then use ISOPuzzle as suggested.

Alternatively DVD decrypter, "settings" "I/O" tab set "Software Read Error Retries to 0".

Then selecting the faulty vob only, rip the disc again. Eventually it will rip what is usable from the damaged area.

Another last resort approach is, if the disc will play on a stand alone (often they will with just a jump where the damage is) then recapture the section by connecting the player to the pc. Not a perfect solution but better that losing the content.

i have repaired discs with t-cut or other car wax's but t-cut is the most aggressive i know and removes a layer of plastic.

I work all night, so when i got home in the early a.m., i downloaded isopuzzle, it was easy enough to figure out and hit start just like setarip_old said it would be. Woke up this afternoon, found out it was at 99.9%, i believed it to be finished. I opened up Nero 7 and attempted to burn an "iso image", this didnt work. Tried dvddecrytor/imgburn, didnt work.

I still have the image, but need to investigate further on what to do w/ the image. I'm more than likely doing something wrong. When i try to load the image into nero or dvddecryp, it opens the drive i've got the image in, i click the folder, it opens, the i see video_ts and audio_ts. If i'm correct, i don't need the audio (it's in the vid file?).....so, i click on the video file and it opens instead of loading into nero or the dvddecryter.

I'm doing something wrong. Oh, yeah, i also tried deepburner, couldnt get the file to load in that one either.

I've got the image, so the hard parts over (right?). I just need help getting it burned onto a dvd so it will play in my ps3 or my Oppo. Any help would be appreciated or if someone could point me to a guide that talks about my specific issue, that would be great.

Check to see if the .ISO image file plays under VLC player. It DOES NOT require you to "mount" the .ISO to a virtual drive...

BTW, I'm guessing that ISOPuzzle showed only 99.9% finished for a reason ;>}

And if it plays in vlc player? Means that I should be able to burn it or what? I'snt vlc player the media player w/ the orange traffic cone icon?

Regardless, i just need to get it on a disk and have it play in a standalone living room player.

BTW, i have no idea what mount in a virtual drive means. :)

it should skip the read error and give you a valid iso to de-compile in dvd-shrink
this may be what iso-puzzle does, I haven't used that program before

A couple of breakups might not be the end of the world, if it's the best the disc can offer. (ISOPuzzle is capable of continuing a rip from another DVD drive though, sometimes two drives can read different bad sectors better.) You can mount it with Daemon Tools or Alcohol 100%; you can also burn it with IMGBurn or Alcohol 100%, as long as certain critical sectors aren't broken.

Yeah, i had two of my friends tell me to use nero recode, it will back up anything.

One thing that has worked for me on the scratch was "Brass-O". It has "saved" a couple of DVD's and "X-box" discs enough to either back them up or make them playable. It all depends upon how deep the scratches are.
