Not quite sure if this is the best forum to post this in, but it's HD DVD Authoring, so hey!!

Just been having a small play with the new HD DVD authoring in Nero Vision 5, and all in all, for what it does and what it costs, it's pretty impressive.

Yes, it does encode to H.264 as well as MPEG-2, but whether or not you can feed it pre-encoded files which it will leave alone via Smart Rendering, who knows.

A couple of small issues:

- You can select either HD DVD SL, or HD DVD DL which would be great if you could get the burners!! Hey Nero, how about adding DVD-5 and DVD-9 so we can get some 3x DVD-ROM action going on!!

- When you get to burning stage, the burn to disc option is greyed out, I assume because I don't have an HD-DVD-R drive. But you can burn to folder though. Burning to a disc image would be nice!

Has anyone else had any experience with this piece of software?

DVD 1/5 and 9 is in i couldn't belive it myself it's called Mini HD-DVD, thx Nero i think they are the first to make it available for Average Joe no more Hex Editing and Hacking your own Mini AVC/Mpeg-2 HD-DVDs, but the Encoding Settings are hard set and the options to change them are really spare and Pre Defined by Nero in 3 Quality Steps (Normal,High,Highest) 1/2 pass setting and 2 1080 Resolutions 1440/1920 (why no 720 res ? ) Bitrate can be set Automaticly, Presets or Manualy. If they would allow a Advanced Mode here (like the one in Recode but with addhearing to High Profile 4.1 not sure if these Mini HD-DVDs use the 8x8 transform currently testing what Quality Preset means wich tools) it would be really cool, nevertheless everyone can master Simple HD-DVDs now with AVC and even an Advanced Intro Video 3D Cubes and Chapter Selection Menus Fully Animated (simple as drag and drop) works very good in the Preview, but do they Play on every PC HD-DVD Software Player, SAP, Xbox360 and especialy MACs ? thats another question that needs to be answered ;)

Doing a sample Encode now inputing 720p to see the Speed and Upscaler Quality gonna report how it looks with the Software HD-DVD Player Compatibility under Windows :)

Mini HD-DVD AVC (defined by Nero)

Media : DVD 1(8cm)/5/9
Video : AVC Profile most probably Simple 4.1 (or defined by the Quality Presets Highest could mean 8x8 transform so High Profile 4.1)
Quality : Normal,High or Highest 1 or 2 pass
Bitrate : Automatic (adapt to Media), Preset or Manual (Min AVG 15000 kbit/s upto 29400 kbit/s VBR)
Framerate: Most probably Input Framerate
Resolution : 1080 i/p 1440/1920 no 720 Resolution allowed as of now it gets upscaled it seems
Aspect Ratio: 4:3 or 16:9
Audio : Automatic, Dolby Digital (AC3) 5.1/2.0, Stero (most Probably AAC-LC ???) and LPCM

and it seems still to be a little buggy likes to crash fast when playing with the Menu stuff, Nero really urgently needs some experienced Product Beta Tester ;)

Ok First try wasn't successfull it created almost the entire video .EVO but seems stoped suddenly at almost the end of the Video Encoding (input was a 720p X264 MKV Halli splitter succesfully has been used no problems Video was in the Preview and everything was fine (i wonder wich decoder was used for it the problem might be to search their with incompatible behaviour to hallis splitter maybe) :) ) and now the Time is passing on the counter but nothing is done :D

Ok the Menu is not the Problem it also stops responding @ almost the end with the Video alone so the Problem has to be somewhere else trying another file .wmv now

As expected with a 720p WMV it works (i even cuted it internaly without Problems to 1 Minute) i hate this :) Encoding the Cube Animation now, seems that Animation stuff is Rendered via D3D (Nero3dMenuEffects.dll) and then Encoded hehe nice Tech Nero (thinks about how he could make his own 3D Animation *g*) :)

Everything took 15 minutes on an 2.8 Ghz X2 to finish including the 3D Animation not quiet fast for a 1 Minute 1280x720p->1440x1080 Test everything was set on Automatic and 1pass btw :d

Wow first time i see AVC Accelleration working with Showtime but Interlacing Stripes are visible for the Intro and Animation (this could be a Nvidia 169.28 Driver problem tough but PowerDVD is working so i doub't it) it seems really the bug with the Hardware Acelleration in Showtime is coused by the Subtittle state of the Media so even if you disable External Subtitles it will allways enable Software Mode when it Detects HD-DVD or Blu-Ray with Subtitles sad sad PowerDVD doesn't need to go into Software Mode for this neither Digital Theatre 2.

Arcsoft Digital Theatre 2 = Crash (Closes itself after selecting the Folder)

So the Best Playback Experience of this Mini HD-DVD AVC you actually don't have with Showtime but PowerDVD uhh that hurts Nero, and seeing the Crash of Digital Theatre 2 i doub't somehow this is Compatible with a Hardware Player (so back to hacking) but first somebody needs to try such a created Mini HD-DVD on a SAP ofcourse ;)

Trying the same now without a Menu (Chapter Selection) Encoding time was now 6 minutes both Cores Utilized fully :)

PowerDVD = Successfull
Showtime = Successfull
Digital Theatre 2 = Successfull

Everywhere Hardware Accelleration was working :)

Nero Vision Mini HD-DVD Playback Experience HDD

With 3D Menus and Intro:

PowerDVD = Successfull
Showtime = Semi Successfull (Main Video is shown 80% then mirrored after the animation and 3D Intro and Animation aren't Deinterlaced correctly)
Digital Theatre 2 = Crash

Plain Main Movie:

PowerDVD = Successfull
Showtime = Successfull
Digital Theatre 2 = Succesfull

Compared to Retail Mastered HD-DVD with Interactive Menus including .XPL

PowerDVD = Semi Successfull (Menu Navigation is problematic with the Mouse hotspots are wrong but Keyboard Navigation works nicely with the latest PowerDVD :) )
Showtime = Semi Succesfull (Menu Navigation works fine with the Keyboard for some Menus others don't really work but Hardware Accelleration generaly doesn't)
Digital Theatre 2 = Semi Succesfull (HD-DVD Menus are flickering and state changes are ignored Navigation is not possible with the Mouse even if activated)

All those test are based on Windows XP SP2 running with a Nvidia 8800GT VP2 and Forceware 169.28 beta driver im gonna test more drivers to see if some of this problems like (flickering buttons) might vanish, but generaly its a pain in the ass with Interactive Menu Compatibility (like the Popup Menus) and PC HD-DVD Player Software (IHD) Blu-Ray (BDJ) seems to be much better supported in General but most players are slow in Rendering BDJ Menus except Digital Theatre 2.

Let's see if it makes a difference in useing the full HD-DVD AVC mode and later burning it on a DVD :) with the Full HD-DVD mode and 3D Menus on a DVD it should be practicly the same just with the needed info to be full HD-DVD compatible (if the're is any such data written as for Retail Mastered stuff the XPL file with some EVO information im still trying to find out how it all works tough, without having the Specs it's painfull) but possibly only the Calculation stuff is different from the Mini HD-DVD mode so i don't expect better compatibility really, but who knows so lets try it and be sure btw that Digital Theatre 2 Crashes with the Mini HD-DVD has nothing to say (could be a bug by Arcsoft in their HD-DVD Parsing to heavy Restrictions maybe) yet it could still work on most SAPs ;) so if you have a XboX360 or any other HD-DVD SAP pleas folks test it :).

Nope nothing different it seems from a Mini HD-DVD except the Size Calculations the content is the same .BUP .EVO and .IFO and also Crashs with Digital Theatre 2 Showtime and the Deinterlacing problem is still here so i really think it's Nvidias Beta Driver Fault or the Nero guys didn't looked so closely @ the new G92 VP2 and PureVideo API changes for it as it uses a new Improved Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing compared to the older Chips and seems PowerDVD is aware of this another explanation would be that Showtime doesn't detect that its Interlaced but that is most unlikely as it's even displayed in the info that it is, i doub't Nero is ignoring their own Flags ;)

Nope those mirroring Problems are still persistent with Showtime and WHQL Driver 169.21 with the 8800 GT also the Deinterlacing Problems, with PowerDVD everything is fine also with this older Driver so definately a Showtime Bug here. (This was false everything is ok)

If some guy from Nero reads this, please allow lower Bitrates then 15 Mbit as custom bitrates and a Advanced Encoder Config for Mini HD-DVD, they should work everywhere the 3D intro stuff is also Lower Bitrate and works and why is DDPlus Audio only used when useing the 3D Menu stuff and else not even selectable ?
