Are you please aware of any plug-in with mp2 support in a normal VirtualDub?

Just install the MPEG-2 Plugin by fccHandler. I think it comes with all required video and audio decoders built-in.
At least I never had to install any additional decoders of any kind to make the MPEG-2 Plugin work...

I don't think the mpeg2 plugin has an audio decoder for mp2, it just passes it compressed and virtualdub has to find a decompressor. There's a qdesign mpeg audio codec that can decompress it.
If you want to directly add a mp2 file to an existing video here's how: Use virtualdub 1.7.x, go to audio->audio from other file, change the file type to all files (*.*), select the input file BUT DON'T PRESS OPEN, change the file type to mpeg audio (*.mp3) then press open. Virtualdub's inbuilt mpeg audio filter can handle *.mpa, *.mp2 and *.mp3 but Avery forgot to add the other formats to the file type filter, so it must be manually selected to force it to be used.

Thank you, but... !!!
VirtualDub 1.7.7.b28312/release (Dec 9, 2007)
I only have Audio - No audio/Source audio/WAV Audio
When I select WAV audio and a renamed mpa file (doesn't matter if sound.mpa or sound.mp3), it throws an error ... is not a WAVE file
Also in the options is only: Windows audio (*.wav) and All files (*.*)
What is your version and if it is working, could you please post a few screen shots?
Thank you.

I said use virtualdub 1.7.X. The latest version is http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/VirtualDub-1.7.X-test8.zip

Actually, versions prior to 2.1 always passed the audio uncompressed. The MPEG-2 Plugin has Avery Lee's "Priss" decoder built into it.
Versions 2.1+ have an undocumented extended open option to allow passing the compressed audio directly, but I have no idea if that feature is working properly yet. It was sort of abandoned around October, and I haven't tested it since then.
VirtualDub-MPEG2 (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable) can import most MPEG and AC-3 audio files.

Oh, right. But does it let you open mp2 files directly or only if they're in a program stream?

VirtualDub-MPEG2 will open .mp2 files directly. It's in the "Audio/Browse for audio..." dialog.

squid_80 & fccHandler: Thank you to the both of you!
VirtualDub 1.7.X.b29088 & VirtualDub-MPEG2 1.6.19.b24586
seem to be working with mp2/mpa files.
squid_80: I am sorry, I didn't know there was VirtualDub 1.7.X that was not the same as VirtualDub 1.7.7 (for example). I thought it was just X as "some number".
