I was wondering if theres any way to do what I want to achieve.I have dvd which I would like to re-encode with some cropping tweaks and cut out couple of things from it, anyway Xpress does a great job until then very end it does not support 5.1 ac.3 It only allows to encode it.So I was wondering what kind of other options do I have to tweak my video and later join it back with synchronized ac.3 5.1 track ? Unless somehow any of TMPGEnc supports copying source audio without change...

If you want to simply do a video convert and use the DVD's AC3 5.1 audio, then do the folowing:

(1) Demux the video and audio streams using a program like DVD Decrypter or DVD Lab.

(2) Save the AC3 5.1 stream to a temp folder.

(3) Use TMPG source wizzard to convert the DVD.

(4) Select TMPG Format tab option to encode video only, but not audio.

(5) Re-build your DVD using the originally saved AC3 5.1 audio combining it with the newly created MPEG-2 file.

I also have upgraded to TMPG Express version 4.4.1.237 and I noticed that when I go into SOURCE EDIT, the window's minimize option has disappeared.

Can you confirm this on your copy of TMPG?

I've got a pestering issue with tmpgenc xpress 4. For at least a year I used this regularly to convert various video files into various other video file formats. Recently I had to reformat my computer and knew I was in for quite a bit of re-installing to get my computer back up to date. At this point I've tried four different versions of tmpgenc xpress 4 and when I try to open any video file it says the typical codec issue "cannot open video, only audio can be opened". First off, yes I know this shouts *CODEC PROBLEM* buuuut here's the thing, I've downloaded all the codecs I had before (mainly from k-lite mega codec pack), I've tried various other codecs (actually following doom9's instructions so I don't have contradicting codecs). Here's the main signal to me that it has to be a preference problem (or something along those lines)... I downloaded the *TRIAL* version of Xpress (which is version 4.4.1.237) and the *trial* actually works just fine. I now have a copy of that very same version and have it registered... but when I try the *retail* version IT has the same "cannot open video" problem. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? Once again, codecs aren't an issue because trial version works fine. Also as a side note, I have version 3 and it works too (I prefer 4 however because it takes about 4 hours to encode 3 hours of video as apposed to version 3.0's 10-20 hours).

FWIW, I wouldn't touch a bulk of those "Bag of Codecs" downloads again. I tried it once and my Windows appeared to run fine but I had weird problems with XVID video running jerky. I backed out of all "add-on" Codecs and just downloaded XVID 1.1.3 and things were back in good shape again.

Ok, I do not know all the formats you are talking about, but I would just attempt to reach a state of balance where XVID works. Then, after establishing stability, I would incrementally Google the best individual Codec for each format that is not available on your system. Use GSPOT to find out what each AVI file is encoded in, download the best Codec, and the net result should hopefully be satisfying.

Can you please confirm something for me. When you go into the EDIT mode do you notice that the MINIMIZE option has been disabled. I don't know if thise is planned or a bug, and its totally a trivial thing, but previous version, I believe, allowed the Windows to be minimized.

If you're refering to the window that gets displayed after pressing 'EDIT', which displays a windows showing 'Clip properties', 'Cut-edit' and 'Filters', then yes, the minimise button is displayed but disabled.
