H264 AVC on PS3 - I want it all...

Hello,

I've read through many forums, posts and threads and still there is much to read... But I hope one of you can help me to reach my goal faster - or tell me if it's not possible yet...

What I know:
It's not possible for the ps3 to play h264 video +ac3 (or dts(?)) audio... This is bad news since my old sony receiver has got no acc (or hdmi) support...

So right now I could stick with mpeg4 asp (divx) and listen to 5.1 ac3 or I could enjoy h264 but only stereo audio since the ps3 will deliver only that to the optical out...

Sorry for writing so much text... I will get to the point now...

My Question:
My goal still is to produce something as close as possible to this:

- h264 video
- mutliple ac3/dts audio tracks (or at least a GOOD dolby pro logic downmix in an aac stereo stream)
- multiple subtitles
- working chapters

... working on PS3 ("standard" not linuxed)

If all other goals are reachable I might be satisfied either with divx or with aac.
Another idea would it be to include every audio track twice a good aac downmix for now and an 7.1 channel aac version for things to come...

Tools I know and use are Nero Recode 3 and Auto Gordian Knot. I would like to stick with these as long as possible for encoding plus maybe some other tools...

I would be very greatful if you could point me to the tools I would need and to tutorials I should read.

just a note: no subtitle support (both for divx and mp4, now) and .. don't know about chapters...

There is currently no chapter or subtitle support on the PS3, multiple audio tracks are supported (on mp4s at least) however, and the PS3 will automatically downmix multi-channel aac audio to stereo if you deselect the aac option in your audio settings. If your receiver doesn't decode aac or accept multi-channel audio via HDMI the only way you can get surround with avc encoded video is by muxing it with AC3 using a tool called MKV2VOB (see this thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=131782), but fast-forwarding and rewind are not supported in the resulting vob file. I myself broke down and got the Panasonic SA-XR57, as not being able to seek through 1.5-2 hour movies just isn't realistic for me.

This is NOT correct.

The PS3 surely can playback h264 video + ac3 or DTS. To achieve this you have to mux the h264 elementary video stream and the ac3 or DTS sound track into an MPEG2 Transport stream.

This is possible in several ways:

* Encode h264 video - using either for instance a patched X264 or for instance one of the latest MainConcept H.264 encoders

* Mux / create BluRay-output using Adobe CS3 encore.
* Process output from CS3 encore using TSRemux
* Burn output from TSRemux using Nero - using UDF 2.50 as filesystem

* Result: AVCHD disc with 5.1 sound playable on a PS3.

PS. The BluRay-compliant MPEG2 transport stream output from Adobe CS3 encore is directly playable on the PS3 with 5.1 audio also from the XMB (if transferred to the internal harddrive on the PS3 ) or streamed from a UPNP server like for instance TVersity. The file is also seekable using FF/REW both when playing from the PS3 harddrive or when streaming from for instance TVersity.
(do remember to rename the file produced from .m2ts to .mpg though before transferring to the PS3 )

I would prefer to go this way:
Use nero recode to encode in mpeg4 avc with dolby digital and the use a tool to put it into another container (vob ?) without recoding...

Is adobe encore able to do that ?
Any other non commercial products ?

but there is still one problem with Encore CS3.. somethine you obtain Error Code 6. No idea was is it.. but I'm unable to render some movies.. That,s really a pain is this...

Right now I'm trying to figure how to use Scnerarist HDVM.. but now I obtain BufferUnderflow :(

I thought XMuxerPro could mux x264 with ac3 to a .ts format then use TSRemux on that to make an .m2ts PS3 playable file!

PS- Wow, here is a new muxer, just found it posted today on this forum.

1. Encode to avc/x.264 with you choice of app
2. Mux this video with ac3 using this new muxer into a .ts file
3. Load that .ts file into TSRemux and make a PS3 compatible file (.m2ts)
4. Copy that .m2ts file to PS3 internal HD or play it from external HDD

How much does Scenarist cost? In my opinion TSMuxer is the best solution. It's for free :)

sure.. but you know like me that is not the important part.. it's for ripping movies .. and we all have the originals in our bookself :)

I'm not sure what you mean, but I'd say that thousands of euros/dollars for Scenarist would be slightly too much for my movie-ripping budget--especially if there are free alternatives.

Why did you using TSremux? Scenarist give a structure that recognized by players as AVCHD if you just delete AACS+CERTIFICATE folders, pass *.m2ts through ps3bdfix (ftp://ftp.maxnet.ru/pub/ps3bdfix/Ps3bdfix101.zip) and burn BDMV folder with at least UDF2.50. Try it. If it works for you, you will be able create BD with menus, chapters, and so on... You can try it on DVD+R/RW. In my case (according to BDP-S300) BDMV-on-DVD+R DL was recognized as BD-ROM.

and by the way... tsmuxer>tsremux gave me an *.m2ts that play with sound only on PS3... Blu-ray players doesn't see audio track...
so scenarist is the only 100% working method for me

with PS3 - no problem at all... but with sony bdp-s300/bdp-s1, pio bdp-lx70a and sams bd-p1400 there is only VIDEO track, no audio... only with scenarist i have them both everywhere

PS3BDFix set Copy Permission Indicator (0x03 [Encrypted]) to 0x00.

o yeah... seems like PS3BDFix doesn't need anymore...
Go back to Windows Explorer and navigate into your Project folder and open the Project.xml file in Notepad. Go all the way to the bottom and find a setting called:

<CopyPermissionIndicator>3</CopyPermissionIndicator>

Change the 3 to a 0 (zero). This will prevent the disc from being flagged as encrypted.

the ps3 cannot play mpeg2 stream dts it needs to be converted to ac3 or burned to a bluray disk structure.

Hmm... My target never was to burn to dvd or bluray... I'm just searching for a way to archive my old dvd's and store them on my NAS (runnning twonky) ...

And I would like to preserve:
- chapters
- audio (multiple) AC3
- subtitles

of a DVD when recoding for a PS3 with avc (h264) ?

*I know this is possible using remuxing to vob or m2ts but seeking is not possible any more (or only in one direction)...

Can't you seek a VOB to previous chapters?
You can try making a MKV (h.264+ac3) and then using mkv2vob, then adding the chapters and subtitles to the VOB (or mkv2vob might take the chapters from the mkv - something to look into!)

I would suggest trying to use a MP4, but I don't know if the PS3 would play AC3-in-MP4 (probably not) and the PS3 ignores MP4 subtitles.
