I have an HD DVR from Comcast. I want to take some HD footage off and onto a computer, having it end up as some kind of video file, whether it's raw AVI or MPEG-2/4, whatever.

Is there not a device to easily do this?

If the firewire ports on your dvr are active you can get the stream off with a firewire cable and the capdvhs software. You may run into two issues with this, if the ports are not active you'll have to call comcast and tell them to give you a dvr with active ports (the FCC requires them to do so) or if it is from a channel which is encrypted (pretty much everything other then the channels you would get over the air) you would have to use an actual dvhs deck which will comply with the 5c encryption (i.e. you can't get them in a playable format on a computer), but will allow you to "back up" your recorded shows.
