That means no user operation is required during installation. Is that possible?

You assume that open source software is automatically free. But it is not. Formats like H.264 are based on patented technologies. Distributing decoders for such a format in large numbers requires payment of license fees. So if you want to be a nitpicker, then for example CCCP can be considered "illegal". Fortunately for us all, open source software is tolerated by the patent holders.

The primary components of both K-Lite and CCCP are ffdshow, haali media splitter and MPC.

Ordinary computer illiterate people don't know how codecs work and what they need to install. So for such people codec packs are pretty much a must. Software like MPlayer is great, but many people insist on using WMP (even though it is a piece of crap). Also don't forget about applications like Windows Movie Maker.

What your logic says is that you are allowed to do evil things as long as someone else is doing more evil things. Well, if I follow that logic then I can do WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT.Any codec pack that includes CoreAVC is inherently illegal and should not be allowed to be discussed on these forums, as it is a blatant Rule 6 violation. If you have a problem with this, feel free to go to another forum.
