How can I play a 720p MKV file on PS3?

Hi,

I have a really big MKV file, about 4.5GB, it is a 720p video and I'm trying to play it on my PS3.

i have already installed firmware 2.10 and I know that the MKV file wont play on it, but is there absolutly anything I could do to this file without re-encoding it, as that would take forever for me to do with my slow computer.

As I understand, the settings for the file are as follows:

Resolution: 1280 x 720
Framerate: 23.976
Video Codec: x264 r667 3918kbps
Audio Codec: AAC 5.1 VBR 320 kbps
Aspect Ratio: 1.778:1

I've managed to get a small piece of the video that I could experiment with before I start to work on the bigger video. So what exactly would I need to do inorder to get this video to work on the PS3?

Why not just re-rip your original HD-DVD? Its probably easier.

I would but I gave the DVD to my brother to watch and he went on vacation for a week...

I remember reading something about someone on this forum creating an application that converts mkv files to vob within a few minutes without actaully re-encoding them. The only problem that I have with that is that it doesn't support videos with the aac codec.

Get the latest version of avidemux (recent versions added MKV read support). Load up your file, leave the audio and video modes to the default 'copy' action, change the container format to MP4, then save a new file. That should copy the audio and video as-is into a new MP4 file that your PS3 should be able to read.

The MKV read support in avidemux I believe is still a work in progress/possibly buggy, so while there's a good chance this'll work fine, it also might just randomly crash. At least it's an option with a relatively simple GUI.

thanks for the advice but after i save the new video, i try to play it and it plays really slow, almost like in slow motion, but the audio is fine, just the video is slow

IIRC, you can just demux the streams and remux to mp4 container as your audio is AAC.

MKVExtract and YAMB should do the job.

that was the program that I originally tried but it always gives me an error "unsupported audio codec: A_AAC"

I used MKVExtractGUI to demux the video and then the latest version of YAMB to remux the video in mp4 and when I tried to play it on my PS3, it came up as corrupted data no matter how I would try to play it.

^ your video (AVC) must have been encoded with a higher profile other than the one recommended for PS3 playback.

AFAIK the max profile allowed is advanced profile 4.1.

U could try re-encoding with MeGUI/RipBot264/AutoMKV/XviD4PSP.

I'm just basically about to give up with this crap. All I wanted to do was watch Goodfellas in HD. I didn't know it was gonna be soooo damm complicated.

Things shouldn't be this complicated for a consumer, cause thats all I am, a consumer, and sony should have loaded the ps3 with these codecs in the first place since they keep saying how the ps3 is a great media player and all...

Anyways, I'm probably just gonna signup for Netflix and rent some Blu-Rays from there

use ripbot264 to reencode. sure its not ideal, but you will end up with a ps3 compatible encode. does the ps3 also have a 4gb file limit?

get a q6600 and you will get some decent speeds :p
