I'm no expert on codecs and whatnot. I know generally how to burn videos onto DVDs and I know the basics of how movie files work, but I'm still very new to this more complex aspect.

With that said, I am trying to get this one movie file of mine, to work in WMP so that I can use my xbox 360 to play the movie on my tv.

Now, I have an .mkv file and using VLC and going to Miscellaneous -> Media Info, I have figured out that my movie is using avc1 for video stream and a52 for audio stream. I may be wrong but I believe this is x264, also because it is mentioned in the name of my movie file.
The movie plays fine in VLC, but I want to be able to play it using my 360. I know that the 360 supports (after the recent software upgrade) divx and xvid so I believe that would be my preferable choice for codec.

I tried playing this movie file in WMP 11 but I only get sound, no audio. I have tried scouring the web, this site included, for methods of transcoding my video file using any method into a format playable by WMP 11.

I have also read that in the process of transcoding there is a possible chance of quality loss, and I'm also wondering if there is any method to reduce this, as my movie is in 1080p resolution and I hope to retain as much of this as possible.

I'm sorry if anything I have posted here is incorrect, once again, I am new to this more complicated aspect of video files.

Thank you in advance.

Why don't you just re-rip from your original DVD to a format better suited to use on your 360?

I no longer have my original. This one file is all that is left.
