View Full Version : "Runtime error '52': Bad filename or number"

I am still having problems getting DVD-Rebuilder Pro to do what it does.
I ripped the DVD to my hard drive. Just the movie not the entire DVD. I then launched DVD-Reb and cloose the folder DBDFab Plat 4 created, as the source. I then choose my DVD burner as the destination.
Under the "Mode" menu I chose the HC encoding, and I also checked the "Imgburn directlly to disk, no ISO."
I clicked on the backup button and got a message that the files already will fit on a blank DVD do I want to continue and I clicked the yes buttomn.
It did it's thing until it gave me an error of Runtime error '52': Bad filename or number.
Here is my log;

It extracted more segments then 30 but not to many more. I could not capture the entire text because whrn the error message comes up you can get to the information screen to capture the text because clicking on continue or whatever it was just closes the program.
Others tell me that there is a log file in the same folder as the program but I could not find it.
What did I do wrong?
Thanks much.................

The log will be in your temporary folder you defined when you set DVDRB up (the same folder where D2VAVS is). It is called rebuilder.log Search for it.
In any event, it would seem you don't need DVDRB, since the initial message is that it fits.
However, the fact that DVDRB has errored out means the source is bad. Given you have used DVDFab, if you have used 4.0.1.2 Beta, it has structural issues which have been corrected (hopefully) in 4.0.2.0 Beta. Try that.
As well, runtime error 52 indicates a problem with the source or working path directories. Make sure you have all proper permissions to access the various temp folders.

I ripped the DVD to my hard drive. Just the movie not the entire DVD.
- "Movie Only" mode is enabled.
You are ripping just the movie, then telling DVD-RB to do just Movie Only... try ripping the Whole DVD and let DVD-RB do just the movie only

You don't need to run this thru DVD-RB.
Looks like you had DVDFab Plat 4 re-encode the movie already

I'll look for the DVDFab that is without issues.
So if DVDFab rips the movie to the hard drive and I can also use it to burn to a blank DVD then what does DVD-Rebuilder do?
Fishman0919
20th December 2007, 20:34
It does a better job at compressing the movie

Well it's official. I can't get DVD-Rebuilder to work. I reinstalled it, restarted my computer and ran DVD-R. It worked once. Without changing any of the settings I attempted to do another DVD and received errors.
This is, in my opinion, the most unstable piece of software I have ever purchased. I am very dissapointed because I really wanted this to work.
Unfortunally it does not work. At least for me it dosen't. Some of you rave about the software and I am guessing it is becaise it works for you or you have the knowledge to fix whatever does not work for you.
I lack this knowledge but in my defense I can follow directions. I am good at that.
But I don't want to build a watch.... I just want to know what time it is.
I have abandoned this software. Good luck to the author and maybe in the futire you will get it right so that us common folk will not have to reinstall the software just to get it to work once.

Some of you rave about the softwareSome? Nay, hundreds, perhaps thousands.
Clearly something's wrong with your PC/software that's giving you problems with RB, and it's difficult and sometimes impossible to troubleshoot PCs "remotely".

@rbaron
Hi!So if DVDFab rips the movie to the hard drive and I can also use it to burn to a blank DVD then what does DVD-Rebuilder do?As a very basic statement, if the movie portion of the DVD exceeds the size of a single-layered burnable DVD, DVD Rebuilder can be used to compress the movie so that it will fit onto a single-layered burnable DVD.
Although there are other programs that perform this same basic function (compression), users of DVD Rebuilder state that the methodology it uses results in higher quality output...

Hi rbaron,
I'm a really old guy with virtually no experience of computing, computers, dvd's, software etc etc.
I purchased DVD Rebuilder, installed it using a guide found on this forum or AfterDawn (another senior moment I'm afraid) had no problem whatsoever with the basic management of the programme.
Only after a month or two did I have any difficulty and that was brought about by my own stupidity. I posted in this forum and the problem was solved quickly and efficiently.
I am now extremely confident in the quality of the programme and am very glad to have purchased it.
My advice, for what it is worth, is to persevere with RB and I am certain that everything will fall into place in due course.
Good luck

BTW I wrote-down onto a sticky note something I read somewhere, maybe from the DVDFab readme?
"Disable 'Remove useless cells' for DVD-RB compatibility"
So I take it that DVDFab defaults to a state that RB does not like? It's what the OP used to rip...
jdobbs

It creates an illegally formatted disc... which is hardly something I would think is just for "DVD-RB compatibility".

DVD Fab released a beta which did not contain video in some cells. That has now been superseded. However, anyone still using that beta to rip will experience problems with DVDRB. There was quite a little discussion going on at CDF (see here (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f116/dvdfab-4-0-1-6-beta-233060/); try to get past all the silly platitudes to the meat of the debate) about this and also in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=132108).

Wow. I've been working crazy hours on another project (the job that pays the bills ;)) and missed that whole debate except for a short discussion I saw here on Doom9. In a way I'm glad I missed it... as it's obvious to me what the problem was and I don't think I could have stood by and listened to others say that DVD specification compliance isn't important.
At any rate... I'm sorry rbaron ran into problems. The error reported: "Runtime error '52': Bad filename or number" is usually an indicator that a file has been locked or removed during processing. I suppose it could be related to the DVDFab issue, but since I haven't personally experienced it, I can't really say. Interesting, also, is the fact that the disc didn't really need to be reencoded -- I wonder if that had an impact?

...anyone still using that beta to rip will experience problems with DVDRB. There was quite a little discussion going on at CDF...Thanks for that; I appreciate blutach that you are "on the case"! I guess the bottom line is that the OP might have had a bad rip.
Having only seen the "readmes" for DVDFab it was impossible for me to tell if the "Remove useless cells" thing was fixed or what. An irony of the CDfreaks forum is that Fab release-anouncements-and-comments are Stickied thus demanding attention, and yet they are loaded with useless "thanks team for yet another release that fixes problems from yesterday's release" posts so they're difficult/impossible to follow.

I appreciate all the comments given to me on this forum.
I don't know why DVD-R is not working for me. I have listened to all of you say that the program is not the problem and I agree with you. I have used DVD-R successfully twice and that usually is right after a fresh install of the program. Getting it to work a second time did not ever happen. I did not changed ANY of the settings from the successful try.
I am using Vista. Anyone else using Vista with DVD-R?
Below is the log DVD-R generated on my latest attempt to get it to work. The error message I received was that it failed to find the encoder and maybe the path is bad or wrong. It is not wrong because it has worked once it the past. Everything is the same. I choose as my source the DVD I want to work with. I choose the destination as my desktop and I choose a folder I created on my hard drive for the working folder. I click Backup and it runs and then gives me the error.
I want this to work I realld do but frustration may win over my desire to make it work.
Any help is appreciated.

Do a search for that title. There are some specific ways it has to be ripped. The DVD has a couple of repetitive filenames in the directory structure... essentially garbage. In fact if you look at it you'll see that it says it has more content than will actually fit on a DVD-9.

What software/procedures, if any, did you use to first rip "Shoot 'Em Up" to your hard drive?
Or are you possibly using an outdated version of AnyDVD to use the original DVD "on the fly" with DVD Rebuilder?

@rbaron:
You will put less stress on your DVD drive if you first rip the movie to your HDD before using DVD-RB. You can use AnyDVD, and then use something like DVD-Decrypter (or even DVD-Shrink without compression) to rip the disc. You can rip to files and then point DVD to that directory; or you can rip to an ISO, then mount the image with something like Daemon Tools, then point DVD-RB to the virtual drive. I prefer the latter method just so everything is contained in one file.

I don't know. I backup discs day-in and day-out. Usually at least 3 a day in testing using AnyDVD and DVD-RB (I usually read to ISO with a decryption-disabled DVD Decrypter over AnyDVD)... and I never run into these kinds of problems. I did notice an oddity in "Shoot Em Up" -- but I ripped it to disc with the AnyDVD built-in ripper and all worked. Are you using any specail settings? @rbaron
"Game Plan", a Disney release, contains a version of "RipGuard" copy protection that has been in use for a year or so. As such, it should be properly processed by recent versions (1 year old or less) of virtually every ripping program.
In light of the difficulties you continue to encounter with different DVDs, I suspect the problem lies either with your burner or the physical condition of the DVDs...

Sorry for the "calm down" remark. I guess my sense of humor is lost when it is said in print rather then in person.
I have three DVD devices. All of them were tried in order to get the movie to be ripped. All of my ripping programs fail to do this. Based on that I would conclude that the DVD itself is a bad one. Although it does play on the computer and in my DVD connected to my TV.
As far as the .ini file.... I can't find this elusive .ini file. The only one that I find is this one below which was located in the movie's "work path" folder.
As I said, all of my ripping programs, DVD-Reb, Clone DVD, DVDFab don't do it.
Oh well........ I'll just watch the original and send it back.
Thanks for the help...

Sigh... I guess posting your INI isn't going to happen? It can be found in "C:\Program Files\DVD-RB PRO"
[07:05:35] 00002 00075 -- error attempting to read from source. This error means the device that DVD-RB is attempting to access is not available or has been unmounted. You might have a hardware problem or something related (like drivers). It's also can be caused by removing the disc while running DVD-RB.
Oh well........ I'll just watch the original and send it back. This might be an indicator of a violation of rule 6. Careful.
Sorry -- but I can only help people who are willing to participate. You seem determined to go in your own debugging direction.

As far as the .ini file.... I can't find this elusive .ini file.
jdobbs and Spazz have both indicated where you might find the INI file, but for future reference, if you know (part of) a file name but not the file's location, you can search for the file. In Windows, you can press [WIN]+F to bring up the Find window. Alternatively, at the command prompt, you'd go to the root drive in question and type "dir /s [filename]". In either case you can use wildcards like the asterisk (*) and question mark (?), but neither Windows nor MS-DOS support regular expressions. But none of that would have mattered in this case; you would simply have searched for "rebuilder.ini".

As I said, all of my ripping programs, DVD-Reb, Clone DVD, DVDFab don't do it.
After all the information you got you still think DVD Rebuilder is a ripping program???
May jdobbs have mercy and give you your money back.

Groucho2004,
Ok, so it is not a ripping program. You need AnyDVD to get DVD-Reb to take the files from the original to a space on your hard drive or get some other burning program to get the VIDEO-TS and AUDIO_TS onto a blank DVD. I get it.
Thanks for your input.
