View Full Version : DVD Shrink discs not playing in DVD Player

Hi,
I've been using DVDShrink for a couple of years. (I am currently using 3.2.0.15).

In the last 6 months I have been unable to play the movies I've backed up on any *stand alone* DVD players - however, the discs play fine on computers and a couple of portable DVD players that I've tried (one of which can play DivX, for certain).

I'm using Nero Suite 6 which came with a Plextor external DVD burner that I bought for use with a laptop with an internal CD-RW. I'm using DVD -R discs, and have also successfully burned discs on a different laptop with an internal DVD-RW. By "successfully burned discs" I mean that I have been having the same problem on the laptop with the DVD-RW as on the laptop with the CD-RW, viz., I can burn discs which play on computers and portable DVD players, but these discs won't play on 'stand alone' DVD players.

These stand alone DVD players seem to try to play the disc continually, leading me to suspect that the session for the disc may not be closed, but I cannot find a setting for this.

I would be very grateful for any advice about this.

Many thanks,

GV

Hi!

Before possibly getting into the possible cause(s) of your stated problem, I want to be certain I understand your question. So, please explain the relevance of your statement:one of which can play DivX, for certainWhat does this have to do with burning/playing DVD backups?

Hi setarip_old,
Thanks for your reply and your question.

I mentioned the DivX point because players that have the capability of playign DivX will play the discs that I have burned in the last year (i.e., the discs which will not play on my regular, 'stand alone' DVD player).

I thought that this might be useful information, perhaps relevant to some setting in DVD shrink that I might have changed or not re-enabled after reinstalling DVD shrink (which I think I've done within the past year).

Sorry if that is confusing, but I'm trying to mention anything that I think is relevant. The main problem, though, is that discs that I now burn will only play in my computers and portable dvd players, not in any regular dvd players.

because players that have the capability of playign DivX will play the discs that I have burned in the last year (i.e., the discs which will not play on my regular, 'stand alone' DVD player). The DivX-capable standalone player(s) may be newer and CLEANER than your "regular" standalone - or may simply be more compatible with the brand/manufacturer of burnable DVDs that you've used.

1) You might want to run a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your standalone player. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US

2) Try using high quality media, such as Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden - and burn at no faster than 8x

Just curious - did your "regular" standalone DVD player play these same DVDs at an earlier date?

Hi setarip_old,
Many thanks for the reply, and advice.

I will get a DVD/CD cleaning disc and run it.

In relation to your question:
1. My 'stand alone' DVD player now plays almost all of the DVD's that I *previously* burned before this 'problem' occurred. But it won't play any of the DVD-R's that I have burned since this problem occurred (that's how I knew a problem had occurred)

2. Other 'stand alone' players - belonging to my friends - were able to play DVD-R's that I had made prior to the problem, but will not play DVD's that I have made 'post' problem. (However, as stated previously, the these DVD's play fine on any computer in which I have tried them).

3. I have ALWAYS used the same blank DVD-R's (Ridata DVD-R) until I began having problems recently. At that point, I switched to Verbatim DVD+R's, with no success, either, in having the DVD's play in 'stand alone' players. I never had a problem with the Ridata DVD-R's at all prior to this, and was very (pleasantly) surprised by this.

I appreciate your interest in this problem and your help with it.

All the best,
GV

Have I nero 8.... up until now I haven't had any problem decrypting, shrinking, burning, & playing on anything. Now all of a sudden the back-up copies only play correctly in windows media player. In nero and any stand alone all the chapters are out of order, no title menu, etc. but in windows media player it's great. I have done something or this infini film stuff take a different setting?

@GV

Please, a bit more clarification - When you speak of "players that have the capability of playing DivX", are you referring to standalone players or software players on PCs? Also:I'm using DVD -R discsI switched to Verbatim DVD+R's, with no successI would suggest that you should have first tried only switching "brands" (To Verbatim from Ridata), rather than "brand" and "format" (To "+R" from "-R") - so that you can better control "all other things being equal".

I'd still suggest that you try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc - on BOTH your standalone player and your burner...

I am having this exact same problem...
I looked and the files before I burned them and everything is correct.
I looked and the files on the disk after the burn and they are diffrent and all movies play chapters out of order.
This problem is driving me nuts and I am not a newbie at this.

Any help from anyone?
Thanks in advance

Update: I just learned on the Nero website that Nero 8 and its current updates 8.2.8 are not compatable with DVD Shrink and there are no plans for it.

Just a little FYI

Hi!

There is nothing exceptional about the DVD files generated by DVD Shrink, that NERO needs to be "compatible with" - nor is there anything in those files that could cause NERO, or any other program, to mix up chapters. The only possible incompatibility might be the same as one that occurred at one point during the ongoing development of NERO v.6.x - and that was only that the NERO SDK of a particular v.6.x version did not allow for DVD Shrink to AUTOMATICALLY use NERO for burning...
