Yes, it's really great. But I can't make PS3 play muxed subtitles in .divx container. AFAIK all certified devices should be able to play those. I guess they didn't finish the implementation yet.

not finish the certification yet.. :(

it seems to me that random divx or xvid files wont work. even with the same audio codecs. although random resolutions are different as well, really shouldnt matter. i cant figure it out.

this file doesnt play:

File : 140 MB (140 MB), duration: 0:22:35, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 59 %, VirtualDubMod 1.5.1.1a (build 1639/release), Video : 109 MB, 678 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 640*480 (4:3), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Audio : 31 MB, 192 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, CBR,

this file does play

File : 340 MB (340 MB), duration: 0:21:59, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 69 %, VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release), ,
Video : 322 MB, 2052 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 720*544 (4:3), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4,
Audio : 17.55 MB, 111 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, VBR, ,

@silentjay1980

First of all Welcome to the Forum!

use avinaptic

and check for custom matrix, qpel, gmc... this features aren't copatible with actual firmware

this file use a custom matrix

Quant type: MPEG custom (*)

and now ps3 isn't able to decode these matrix.. we must wait an update

actually you must REENCODE the movie for compatibility

you can use autogk or avirecomp or automkv... :)

hi, I have some MKV movies i made, the sound is AC3 and the video is mpeg-4 avc/h.264 (nero digital). can someoneo tell me how I can convert that to a DIVX for the PS3? I can extract audio and video from my MKV, but I really didn't figure out how to get the streams back into DIVX. Do I have to reconvert the video stream? sorry for the (maybe) stupid question.

@Thorax12

you have several choice:

after demuxing audio and video you have to encode audio to aac , then mux (with yamb) new audio.aac and video.h264 into mp4 (hopefully playable by ps3)

OR

after demuxing audio and video you have to encode video to DivX , then mux audio.ac3 and movie.avi into a new file avi playable by ps3

OR

encode the mkv file to Divx+Mp3 without demuxing at all

you can use autogk or automkv for encoding video and audio

I read something about a 2GB limit on Divx files, using avi container. If we encode an HD source isn't that going to be over 2GB most likely, so how do we play it back without splitting it into multiple files. Is there another container that can take divx that the PS3 plays??

buzzqw
21st December 2007, 22:25
actually divx is playable only muxed in avi.. so we must live with the 2gb limit

not a big problem.. just split it with virtuadub/avimuxgui...

maybe in future upgrade we can get divx muxed into MP4 and so the file limit will be 4gb (the fat32 limit of external hd)

@buzzqw
Have you compared divxHD and x.264 with your own eyes to see if they differ much?

Thorax12

@buzzqw

hm, I tried using using avidemux. audio format: copy and video format xvid. container avi. but when copying it to a usb memory stick the ps3 doesn't see any video data. any ideas?

@tyee

very high bitrate (>6000) divx is as good as x264 , at least on 1080i... on 1080p it's better x264, just because of better compression

but for true HD movie , the bitrate isn't a issue (>12000) so it's both good

Also.. remember that Sony added divx playback mainly for gaming pourpose!
The divx format should be used, in original plan, to add more contents (films/sequence/intro..) to games, more content because of "compressed" status of divx versus plain uncopressed sequences (remember that games are usually on dvd .. not on blue ray!)

@Thorax12
this is a problem of ps3!
just yeasterday i tested some divx made by avidemux.. AND NONE worked!
Even if i don't use custom matrix, gmc/qpel.. the avi could not be played!
now that you have your avi.. just try to "remux" with virtualdubmod (in directstream copy mode)

Ok, so we have the 2Gb size limit. Can you make the files play in order on the PS3 ( like a play list )? I have One DivxHD movie (720p) split up in two files on a DVD.

There is no playlist for video so far (hmm, wonder why eh!). I read that the "Album" feature might be able to do it though. I haven't tried it yet, has anyone??

Thorax12

@buzzqw: what is the correct container?? avi or mp4

buzzqw
22nd December 2007, 09:32
@Thorax12

the preferred container by PS3 is MP4

in avidemux i done test with avi/xvid.. not with mp4..

i will try some more options..

you will get news

so for instance nothing works ;-) i'm just testing out this solution http://board.ps3-hackz.us/playstation-3/tutorialz/software-tutorialz/6691-mkv-auf-ps3-abspielen/ but even this one won't really work ;-( ... did you try it on xbox 360? i tried the xvid on my xbox (not 360) with mediacenter, that one works perfekt ;-)
