Ok, so I can stream the VC1 encodes and they display ok on the PS3 with firmware 2.1, but I dont get any sound. Ive tried a number of files all of which have 5.1 soundtracks and all play perfectly on the 360.
I haven't read if there are any limitations regarding the VC1 soundtrack, ie, only 2.0 for example. Does anyone know or anyone had any luck with this ?
I also didnt have to re-enable WMA playback on the PS3 after the 2.1 upgrade, but perhaps that is because I had already had enabled it.

A quick update :-
Looks like it will decode VC-1 and WMV3. Even 10Mps VC1's. It decodes WMA2 when muxed with WMV3 (although it reports them as VC1 !) but doesnt decode WMA3 - bugger.
I cant quite put my finger on it, but it will decode VC1's, but not all of them. The only thing I can see between the ones it will decode and the ones it cant is the file size. The ones it will play are <6GB. Those it wont are ~8GB, just reports unsupported data type.
It will play a 5845Kbps VC1 16MBps peak VBR 5GB, but not 9809Kbps VC1 13Mbps VBR peak. (8GB)
It plays an 8348Kbps VC1 (Peak 10Mbps) but its a short movie, and the filesize is 5.5MB.
Looks like it does have to do with file size. Ive seen reports of 2GB file sizes being reported, but Im guessing this is DivX files and not VC1's.
We are still stuffed with no WMA3 though !
Ive been playing around for the past few days with MKV/AC3 and TS/AC3 files transcoding them to play as VC1/WMA3's on a 360, so its all kinda fresh at the moment :-) I only noticed this update was coming yesterday - Only to find this :-(

I've been try to convert an HD DVD to a WMV. I have a playable WMV (on Windows), but PS3 flags it as unsupported.
What I've done so far is:
1. Extract the raw VC1 with EvoDemux
2. Mux to AVI with VC12Avi (which works awesome)
3. Remuxed to wmv and added wma2 audio with ffmpeg.
Plays on windows, unplayable on PS3. I have no audio at the moment.
For some reason the PS3 doesn't even recognize the .avi, I have to convert it to .asf. It recognizes DivX movies just fine.
Update:
Added audio and now the PS3 recongizes both codecs and displays information. Still won't play!

I demuxed a small chunk of VC-1 video. About 2 minutes.

I have a video file encoded in VC1 and WMA 9 pro (5.1). I would like to play this on the PS3. At the moment when I play it all I get is video since the PS3 doesn't understand WMA Pro (5.1). I have been able to demux the two streams but can't work out how to create a 5.1 audio stream that would work on the PS3. Clearly the PS3 can play VC1/DD since that is a standard format for BR titles. But even if I were able to convert the WMA Pro track to DD, are there tools that can remux VC1 and DD?
Failing that I guess I can convert the audio to stereo (WMA2) and use Windows Stream Editor to mux it back.
Thanks

Getting 5.1 surround sound video on my PS3 has been driving me crazy. I have been using TMPGEnc 4.0 Express to try and encode to WMV. But when I play it on my PS3 all I get is a rainbow of colors for video.
I have only gotten Dolby Digital on my PS3 two ways:
1) Rename my HD mpeg to .m2ts but then the file size is huge.
2) Encode to .MKV and then use mkv2vob. But then if I try and fast forward anything beyond 1.5x locks the video up.
WMV VC1 should support up to 7.1 channels. The video I made plays fine on my computer. Why is the picture all jacked when I try it on the PS3?
