Is it possible to make HD-DVDs at standard definition and lower quality audio settings? I know you can produce HD-DVD video on DVD-Rs, but I think the playback time is around 30 mins. Wondering if there is a way to take advantage of the improved codec/format stuff (over DVDs) as you lower the settings similar to a DVD (like 720or640x480 and lower setting on DVD-audio), and as a result gain longer time for video on a DVD-R. I have tried many of the popular programs for editing and producing video, and no luck. Maybe it isn't possible... Thought I would throw the question out there anyway. I hope I wasn't confusing. Thanks

Don't know anyone who's tried that... but according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD#Video) HD-DVD does allow for SD res (and less, CIF!). It might just be that no tool commonly available renders to that res and bitrate.

Yet. :)

Hi,

It is possible to author standard content as a hd-dvd structure. The new codecs (vc-1, h.264) work well with good compression. Since h.264 is mpeg-4 the compression ratio is comparable to xvid (roughly 700-800 Mb per hour).
An Hd-dvd player will scale all content to fill the screen, so no extra functionality is needed if menus or other content is not SD resolution.
I have only tried authoring with scenarist. What software do you use? Is the problem to author or playback?
