I plan on encoding some files to AVC format. Does anyone have advice for maintaining compatibility with portable players? I don't have any specific device in mind, just looking for general advice.
Also, how do portable players in general handle 720x480 resolution video, or at least greater than 640x480?

It varies greatly depending on the portable device you're encoding to.. For the iPod and PSP, there's AVC compliant profiles for MeGUI and StaxRip, I'm not sure about other GUIs though since I've never used them.
Other devices, like the Archos PMP, you'll have to look up the specs for what level, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, etc the video must comply to. It'd be a similar procedure for other devices as well, provided that manufacturers actually provide that information.

There is also a profile for the archos 5th generation (archos 605 profile). It can be improved (more options are supported) but it works. I'm trying to improve it, but I don't know enough about the H264 options right now, looking for a guide :)
