View Full Version : how to rip seperate audio channels from DVD?

Anyone know if it's possible to seperate out the audio channels and rip them from a DVD seperately? I just bought the movie "A League Of Their Own" on DVD, and I need to extract that one line of dialog where Madonna talks about her uniform spilling open and her bosoms come tumbling out. The problem is, there's crowd noise and background junk going on while she's speaking, I'd like to be able to extract just her vocals ONLY (assuming they're in 1 audio channel by itself?) The DVD is in Dolby Surround Sound - are there any methods to isolating each channel and ripping it seperately, as audio-only? I took a quick peek at the Search function, and didn't see any other threads on this (I hope I'm posting in the right section). Anyone's kind help on this I'd appreciate immensely!

Hi!

One method by which you should be able to accomplish that would be to load the audio into an audio editor, such as GoldWave and setting all "amplifier" settings to "0", other than mid-range, which you should raise to maximum...

somebody just sent me this link thru email, and I thought I'd share in case anyone else is wondering the same question:

I dunno if this'll work, but I plan to try very soon! :)

If don't work you can try also other free soft like:

1) DVDDecrypter to rip your DVD to hard disk.
2) DGIndex to extract the ac3 from your VOB files.
3) BeLight (or BeHappy, or Foobar, ...) to decode ac3 to uncompressed wav files (also split in monowav's)

@DJMichaelAngelo

Please clarify - Are you asking how to eliminate the background noise of an audio clip (which is what I've provided an answer to), or are you simply asking how to extract the audio clip from the DVD (which is all your link and the post by "tebasuna51" address)?

so, both methods could lead to what he wants... if he's lucky enough, her voice is "center" only or he has to use an audio editor for his task...

setarip_old: yup, sillKotscha is right -- I'm looking to easily (with as little effort as possible!) get a .wav rip of the 10 second or so soundbyte of Madonna's quote from the movie, WITHOUT all the background noise, etc. What I'll do first tonight after work is the low-tech way: run a cord from my stand-alone DVD player's output, into my computer's mic inputs, record the section I want in Cool Edit Pro, then try filtering out the background noise. If I'm really really lucky, that will work and I'll be done. If I'm unlucky, then I'll have to roll up my sleeves and do some software finnaggling.

thanks man! Do you know if these 3 programs are either freeware or come with trial versions? I'd hate to pay huge $ for something that I find out is no good for what I need. I tried it using DVDshrink to rip my DVD, then VOBrator to "demux" the files (whatever that means) and AC3Tools Pro to seperate the files. And it ALMOST worked! I was so closed I could taste it -- the Dolby channel seperation method of the audio (L, R, center, etc) worked like a charm ....but only on the first 20 minutes! I'm still working on it though - any other tips from anyone I'd love to hear! (oh btw, setarip_old, after listening to the soundbyte in question more carefully, it has TONS of background noise in it - music, trumpets, crowd, etc ....probably no way to filter it out manually. This DVD audio channel seperation method looks like it'll be my only hope)

Success! DGIndex worked where VOBrator had failed me - I'm so thrilled. AC3 Tools worked brilliantly too. I'm actually just a wee bit disappointed in my final results still: the center audio track had all the movie dialog obviously, but it ALSO had some of the trumpets and band music that I thought would be only contained in the L channel and R channel! So this is the end result for the Center channel, the soundbyte I was looking to isolate:

I took it one step further by inverting the .wav of the L&R channels, and pasting them directly OVER top the center channel (the "inversion" method some people use to filter their own acapellas from song and remix instrumentals). This gave me a much better (but still not perfect) soundbyte:

I'm thinking this is probably as good as I'm gonna get it ....unless somebody's feeling REALLY ambitious and wants to take another stab at it *lol* Thanks as always to everyone who contributed to this thread, I'm always blown away by you guys' knowledge.
