View Full Version : (Avisynth?) DVD upscaling?

Hello,

I am backing up some of my movies, and since I usually would play the dvds on a large monitor, it would make sense to upscale them before encoding since I have the bitrate to spare. Does anyone have any tips for upscaling with avisynth (limitedsharpenfaster or something?)

Thanks.

Upscaling before encoding is a pointless waste of bitrate. You can just as easily do it on playback.

But wouldn't you be able to use non-realtime (higher quality) methods to make it look better? Or would the percieved quality increase be too small to be worth it?

But wouldn't you be able to use non-realtime (higher quality) methods to make it look better? Or would the percieved quality increase be too small to be worth it?Far too small, and furthermore, Lanczos and the like are still fast enough to do real-time on playback in most cases.

The only time you'd ever want to use the NNEDI methods are when you have a huge screen that you can practically see the pixels of. If you sit close enough that it completely fills your vision (normal viewing distance is much further), then you notice the extra sharpness. That was my tests, anyway, and I'm not quite an eagle eye. Otherwise, lanczos + sharpening or grain is plenty.

Though if you're trying to watch youtube junk in HD, then there's nothing for it but to spend the time. :p
