How good can a good encoded .mkv rip from bluray or hd-dvd be?

assuming I got a good encoding, how does it hold up against the original? I mean a rip like 8GB from a 40GB disc?

Quality must have give in somewhere right?

1. Terrible question. MKV is a container format, it can contain nearly any video format known to man.

2. Rule 6, strike, etc.
