PAL to NTSC

I have checked here and also Googled it and I was wondering if there is an easy way or program to change a region 2 PAL DVD to region 1 NTSC. I found tons of answers but they all refer to different programs needed or combinations of programs to get the job done and it sounds like some of them don't do a real good job of it either. I don't want to try all of them as I don't have that much time to spend on one movie. So has anybody done it with good success and how did you do it? I'm trying to copy "The Boys In Company C".

The fact that some of the methods posted here at the Doom9 Forums involve the use of more than one program doesn't necessarily mean the methodology is complex...

Well, you have to start out by telling us what your source is.

I see it's a movie, that's great.

What format do you own the movie in? DVD? VHS?

The first step is getting the video on your hard drive so you can work with it.

Then you generally have to separate the audio and video.

You need to resize NTSC to PAL (720x480 to 720x576) and adjust the frame rate from 29.97 to 25. You also have to adjust the audio accordingly. This can all be done pretty easily with AviSynth.

Then you need to encode the audio and video to whatever format you want to deliver in - be it MPEG-4, DVD, or whatever.

If you happen to own Procoder, it does this flawlessly every time. It is very pricey though.

Other commercial solutions include TMPGEnc Plus.

There are freeware solutions out there, too - consider SUPER.

I was in your situation a year or two back and decided the easiest solution was to buy a cheap DVD player that would play NTSC and PAL.

I'm trying to copy "The Boys In Company C"Curious that the DVD was released in Europe on May 11, 2005 and, for some reason, has still not been released in the U.S.

Thanks blutach for the tip on Procoder. I downloaded a copy of it and it worked fine. A little hard to understand how to work it when you don't read instructions first, if there are any. It was very very time consuming doing the conversion too (9 hours 44 minutes) to do the initial PAL to NTSC. Then another 8 hours to convert MP2 to DVD format. I might have done something wrong along the way but I now have a working DVD. Thank you very much for the insight.

Procoder does take a while (even on fast machines), but its output is tremendous.

You could have converted in one operation - there is a preset - and anyway, you can adjust all your input parameters. Play around with it a bit. :)

I was in your situation a year or two back and decided the easiest solution was to buy a cheap DVD player that would play NTSC and PAL.

It would be advisable to purchase also a TV that displays both PAL and NTSC, because some frames are dropped and the colors are mixed up and sometimes the picture turns cropped in the DVD player conversion. I have an old TV that supports PAL, NTSC and SECAM.
