Hi!

There's nothing to be "figured out". The Region 1 version contains NO newer or different copy protection - and can even be properly ripped using only good ol' DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4...

I tried the new dvdfab, it only goes to 2.70% then comes up error

Try cleaning the disc and then retry with DVDFab. If it still doesn't work, try using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 (This is a different program than DVDFab or DVDFabHDDecrypter).

If it still doesn't work, return the DVD to the place of purchase, in exchange for a new replacement DVD...

I had no problem ripping it, you got yourself a bad disc there.
