Good way to join a 2 sided DVD Movie

Whats a good way to join a double sided DVD movie into (1) Xvid/Divx file?
Should I rip the VOBS off both sides, join them, then run AutoGK to encode to 1 AVI, or should I encode to (2) AVIs first, then join the AVIs?

Is there a easier & better way that Im missing?

It's cleaner and simpler to make two .AVIs (using IDENTICAL video and audio settings) and then join them...
