Hi!

I'm fairly sure it won't give you much solace but, many of us frequently pay the price for being "early adopters/adapters":

Some of us, including yours truly, paid $500 or more for the first DVD burners to hit the market. Some of us paid $13 each for the first D/L burnable media. Some of us also paid mucho dinero for the earliest Apple][, Atari 800, Commodore, etc. Some of us paid several hundred dollars for the first "gigantic" 20Mb hard drives for those systems.

And some of us will pay $1,000 for the first available BR or HD burners.

And for all of the above, we have understood that thankfully, unlike virtually everything else in this world, these high tech products have and will assuredly see DRASTIC price drops and/or significant product improvement...

My beef is that I don't really consider myself an "early adopter" in this case, otherwise, I'd agree with you. Heck, when I bought it a couple of years ago (for $30, not $20), it was v.6.3.

Surely you must concede that buying the sixth generation of a product does not make one an "early adopter." :p

No, that's not what is happening here. Selling it for less is not the same thing as giving it away for free.

Not technically, but it's along the same lines. ;) Think of it like a 1-time sale, a PS3 that's £430 on release is now £300. Shit happens, we get shafted, we complain, but we still live with it. Sorry for your $30 loss.

Oh, but it’s not a $30 loss. When Zach bought DivX paying that much money was the only way to get it. If you can’t or won’t wait for a special offer, you pay the regular price. That’s not evil, that’s perfectly normal business practice everywhere.

No, I'm pretty sure it's legit since they've done it before. When their main competitor (xvid) is giving away their product for free, it makes sense - give people a reason to try switching.

Increasing the installed userbase (of encoders in particulars) should also benefit the DivX hardware-related business, though the Community codec already looked appropriate enough. A promotional offer looks right for increasing brand awareness further as well.

Slightly offtopic: do DivX videos get muxed with the registration info used, in medatada? As in, would 2 same vids encoded with same settings but from different registered people, be bit-by-bit identical ?

Sweet! I got my serial instantly, and it works like a charm. Doesn't seem like a scam at all. Finally I get to play with "insane" mode again, after all these years... :D

I don't know about registration data, but if you even encode the same file twice (same settings), the results won't be identical. Seriously, try it...

Wow! I just tried, I encoded twice a file in one pass mode on "better quality" preset and second file was 3 Kb smaller than first one!
