I am unable to capture the audio portion of some mini dv tapes. I have 14 tapes and one tape will allow me to capture both audio and video. I'm using a panasonic pv gs83 connected via firewire, tried it on 2 different pcs I've checked all the connections countless times. Tapes recorded with panasonic transfer the audio no problem

These tapes were originally captured about 5 years ago at an event on 2 sony pd 170's and a cannon gl1.

I can hear the audio coming thru the camera but it doesen't register on the time line There is an audio track created but no sound comes from it. When I try capturing the tape that transfers the audio I can hear the audio both coming thru the camers speaker and thru the head phones connected to the sound card on the pc

The tapes that dont capture the audio I hear it coming thru the cameras speaker but not thru the head phones

I can't figure this out and was hoping someone here may have some suggestions If you know of any work arounds that will allow me to capture the audio seperatly and then combine with the video track please let me know

Thanks for taking a look

I've come across this when trying to import Type-1 DV AVI files into various NLEs. I think it happened with Vegas and Premiere especially when the audio is 32kHz/12-bit.

The trick is to capture them as Type-2 DV AVI. If you don't have that option with your particular capture program, you can use our free software (see signature for link) that will let you choose Type-1 or Type-2. During capture, you can also look at meters and scopes to verify the audio is there.

As an immediate option, see if you can bring your files into Windows Movie Maker and get the audio (WMM understands Type-1 DV AVI files the way they should be!)

It does need a fairly recent processor (last 4 years or so).

Try WinDV - it supports capturing to both types.

(Did you try looking at a file with Movie Maker?)

I did get it to install on another pc and will try your other suggestions.

Thanks

I did try movie maker no luck I usually capture with Vegas. I noticed on one of the tapes it started to record the audio in the begining and the display said 12 bit and then when the audio capture stoped it displayed 16 bit.

So I think that most of the tapes were originally captured in 16 Bit and that this cam for some reason won't allow the 16 bit audio to capture. But I do hear it on the cam speaker and saw it on the output audio meter on your software.
Appreciated your feed back on this

I am trying now to use the usb port to capture the audio with your program and haven't figured out how to do it

There are no rca cables out btw on this camera

Can your program do this ? I can hear the audio but can't figure a way to save it other then the DV processor config

Thanks again John

Our program works with FireWire only.

If you can put a short clip (2 or 3 seconds) on a file server and send me a link to it, I can take a look and see if there is a way to get the audio to appear in your editing software. (You will need to capture a short clip directly rather than trim a larger one.)

I have an older camcorder that records 32/12 only and when I capture from it, the audio doesn't show up in Vegas....
