i recently ripped a movie to my hardrive and have been doing many experiments with it in the CCE part. i read this http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12718 and began to do it on my own.

at first, i used markrb's personal bitrates to rip this 1hr39min movie. i set the max to 2600, min to 1300, max avg to 2250 and ran CBR with 192 bits of audio. it took about 4 hours and everything seemed fine. the picture was vivid and the sound was clear. the resultant .bins took 1651973 kb and took two cds.

then i decided to crank up the bits. i set the max to 3500, min to 1800, max avg to 3250 and ran 1 pass VBR with a Q factor of 5 and 192 kbs of audio. it took about the same time.when i put it in, i was expecting a a better quality picture. it LOOKED exactly the same. the resultant .bins took 1596231 kb and took two cds.

my next would have been to run multipass vbr = 4 and keep the bitrates that i used in 1 pass vbr. however, the darn thing said like 18 hours and so i said forget it. im guessing the picture would have looked the same. but im not sure how large the files would have been and how many cds would have been required. can anyone guess or figure out?

so my main question is why the two methods if the difference is so minute that the common eye cant decipher it? and which is the most efficient method, meaning that it provides the most quality and the least quantity (as in number of cds used)?

Multipass will always give you best bang for your buck...best quality combined with smallest fileseize, downsid is the time of encoding...however, "quality" is in the eye of the beholder, if you are happy with CBR or 1pass, then stay with it....you will not get 1hr39min on 1CD at avg bitrate of 1300 anyways, so CD size is really not the issue.

anyways, kdiddy thnx for replying. im currently doing a 5 pas VBR on a movie and its gonna take nine hours. i set max at 3500, min at 1800, and max average at 3250. these are the same settings that i used for 1 pass vbr. i see that its gonna take twice as long. however when the CCE window opens up it says the info and then it states the .avs and says vbr at 1835 Kbs and it then states my min and max. so it looks like this: 1835 (3500-1800) kbs. does this mean that the resultant movie will be 1835 kbs? and if so, how does CCE figure that the mid point between 3500 and 1800 is 1835? isnt that wrong or does that number mean something totally different?

If you say DVD2SVCD that you wants to have a 99min movie on two CD´s, then the program reduces the encoding bitrate (your avg bitrate is a max! avg bitrate - totally independent of your encoding method). So if you increase the number of CD´s to 4, you will have an encoding with the max avg bitrate of 3250kb/s.

Your welcome, however, too many passes in my book..most peopel say you won't notice in quality gain or filesize improvment past 3-4 passes.

IMO, you a serverely limiting the effectiveness of the encoder by having the MIN bitrate soo high, if I were you I would do 3 passes at 300-3250-3500...IF you are going to use VBR,...my personal taste is to use VBR anytime my avg bitrate is below 2200...anything above 2200, I use CBR, simply because I feel at those high of bitrates, CBR does just fine.

No, that is the bitrate at that moment in time of encoding. The way it works, is that it analyzes the video to determine what scenes will need what bitrate depending Q factor that you set etc....so like in my case 300-1700-3200, If the encoder feels that it can do a scene at 300, then thats 1400 more free bits that a real complex scene can have or that CCE can redistribute in some fashion, 1700-300 = 1400. say scene normally would might take 1700, but would look ideal at 2200..well now it can take 500 bits from the extra 1400 bits that were saved from doing that scene at 300....and apply it to that scene...in the end the average bitrate will be as close as possible to what specified...not always exact, like maybe 1689 instead of 1700...
