I don't know exactly which forum I should post to. If I'm in the wrong place, please help me to find the right one...

I'm trying to extract the audio tracks from some of my DVDs. How can I do this? The DVD files have already been ripped to my HD.

By the way... Can DVD be exactly copied like EAC do with CDs?

Thanks in advance.

Rosivaldo.

You can do that with Avidemux, if the files are already ripped to your HDD.
Simply open the first VOB file (e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB) of the track you want to extract. The "VTS_XX_0.VOB" file usually contains no data.
Say "yes" when Avidemux asks to index the MPEG file and also say "yes" when it asks for appending the rest of the files.
Then use "Audio" -> "Main Track" to choose the audio track you want to extract (if there are several audio tracks).
Now select the desired audio format in the left side menu, e.g. "MP3 (LAME)" or "AAC (FAAC)".
You should also be able to use "Copy" mode to avoid re-encoding, if the audio track is in the AC-3 (Dolby Digital) or MP2 format.
Finally use "Audio" -> "Save..." to save the Audio track.

BTW: I think ripping Video-DVD is different from Audio CD's, because Video-DVD's are in fact "data" discs.
As long as there are no read or decrypting errors, the copy should be "exact".

Thanks for your quick reply, LoRd_MuldeR.

Before I start downloading Avidemux right now (I'm using a dial-up connection :scared:), I have an additional question I forgot to mention: does it save each chapter's audio as a separate file?

Thanks again.

Rosivaldo.

No, it doesn't.
Avidemux will either open all VOB's as one big file (the entire track) or it will open one single VOB file.
The chapter information is stored in the IFO files, which Avidemux doesn't read at all!

Note: Although most tracks are split into several VOB files, those VOB's usually do not represent the chapters!
Nevertheless some DVD rippers (e.g. DVD Decrypter) can split the tracks by chapter, so there wil be one VOB per track.
I assume you didn't do it that way...

But don't worry: You can set the "start" and "end" markers manually in Avidemux. See the "A" and "B" buttons!
This way you can select which part you want to extract, e.g. one specific chapter...

BTW: If you got a dial-up connection, make sure you download the latest build, so you don't need to download again!

@rosivaldo

Hi!

Since you've already ripped the DVD to your hard drive, you won't be able to use DVD Decrypter (unless you've created an .ISo image file and then go to the trouble of "mounting it to a virtual drive).

As an easy-to-use alternative, you can use SmartRipper in "movie" mode, select the chapters you want, select "Stream Processing" and then select ONLY the applicable audiostream...

Good idea!

If you set "File - Splittig" to "every chapter" in the "Settings" menu and if you select "Demux to extra file" for the audio stream on the "Stream processing" tab, then you will get one audio file (.ac3) per chapter.

Indeed I haven't done so.

Thanks for the help.

I've downloaded SmartRipper and will try it.

Thanks for all.
