Humour me please. I've scanned thro the FAQ's and couldn't find the answer.
I have a non-copyrighted DVD of me on my racing motorcycle. I would like to rip the content to one large mpeg and then using a tool like Adobe Premiere pull out selected clips for encoding & uploading to YouTube.
If I use a ripper such as DVD Decrypter it gives me a bunch of vob files.

Hi!If I use a ripper such as DVD Decrypter it gives me a bunch of vob files.Unless you go through the settings (Under the "Tools" dropdown menu) and set DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to one file - and then simply change the ".VOB" extender to ".MPG"...
BTW, if your harddrive is formatted as FAT32, your individual filesize is limited to 4Gb - No such limitation for NTFS-formatted drives

You could use AVIdemuxer to do this. It is a tool which can edit, video/audio in copy mode (=no re-encoding) r you can use different filter to re-size or other changes and then re-encode file with codecs that fit your purpose and containers.
If you open the first VOB with AVIdemux you will have the option of connecting those or treat them as individual files. AVIdemux make an index of MPEG files like VOB, so it might take some time until you can start edit your file. That index (idx as extension will save you time later when you open teh same file next time for editing).
Use google to find AVIdemux!
What video file formats can I upload?
YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG transferred from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones.
We've found that files converted from .wmv to one of the other formats our webpage accepts generally have a lower playback quality than other file formats. If you have your source video in a format other than a .wmv file, you may want to encode directly to MPEG4 (DivX, Xvid, SVQ3) at 640x480 resolution, with 64k Mono MP3 Audio. If you have a source .wmv in high bitrate and larger resolution you may want to convert to MPEG4 at full resolution and then resizing to 320x240 using a high quality resizing algorithm - this can help reduce the number of artifacts you end up with.
Quote from you youtube as you can see. I would recommend to see in menu for Auto in AVIdemux and use IPod profile as it will set AVIdemux to re-size to 320 x 240 (look into "filter") and let you use Xvid (look for "configure" as there is setting codecs option), you can change sound to MP3 (LAME) instead of standard AAC (FAAC) in encoder which is Ipods profile setting. This should give a small enough size to upload and still have some quality.
Move those markers around in AVIdemux (A: start and B:end) to cut out those part of your video for youtube. Remember to set an extension for that container you use as AVIdemux doesn't do that for you, like MP4 for an IPod profile or AVI.
