some companies have been surprised to see how famous they became after "pirats" have downloaded movies even in the middle of the jungles.

no need to publicize a movie, the P2P will do it for free and people will buy it if they like it.

If you actually mean TRAILERS and not the ENTIRE movie, this is an idea that has aleady been in existence for quite awhile.

On the other hand, if you actually mean uploading ENTIRE MOVIES for free downloading, I'd suggest that it will be quite some time until you have to duck to avoid those flying pigs referred to by "Inventive Software" ;>}

Vongo allows downloads of movies from several studios (e.g. Sony) for $10/month. If they replaced the fee with some ads they would explode the number of customers using the service. (Some people might prefer the $10/month to get rid of the ads.)

A number of networks are getting into the business of free, ad-supported TV show downloads.

It's never going to happen that these will be free, without ads. They could cut down on bandwith costs with P2P, but these costs are just a tiny amount of their costs. And, P2P doesn't work well with streaming, which all the legal providers support (in some cases, exclusively).

Sure, when the studio closes the costs will go down to nothing.

Add supported media could be big but the way they do it now, to keep as much control as possible, the costs just aren't scalable. until they are, the old media organizations are going to keep fighting it tooth and nail by keeping pricing and the costs of distribution to high to let themselves view a web presence as anything more then experimental or only promotional, a place holder for later.

I for one would much rather see a movie in the theater, or wait for it to come out on disk and rent/buy it than settle for some crappy online copy. I couldn't give less crap about the ones secretly filmed with camcorders in the theaters, or screener rips, or the ones post-produced by commercial pirates.

I personally use the net like a try before you buy
much like going into a big name music store and picking up the headphones they've got lining the walls, most of what I see isn't worth the bandwidth it uses
which is pretty bloody sad if you ask me

what? how it could be done by allowing people to download it for free? i think it will not be fair for movie industry... and it could have a bad effect too to all movie fanatics.. maybe it would be better if they can lessen the price of those movies in the market...

Apple iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/) have pretty much got the best system going... you can download any series and movies at 640x480 (encoded from source material)... the quality is, quite frankly, superb (2000+ bitrate) !!!

IMAX (http://www.imax.com/ImaxWeb/static/swf/ial_takeover/welcome.jsp) is pretty much the best movie experience out there... but you don't allways want the absolute best.
Sometimes, you don't feel like watching a movie at the cinema either and a DVD at home with friends is just fine.
Othertimes, you just want to catch-up on your favourite TV-series and a 640x480 iTune download is just the ticket.

That said, even crappy recodes can be a whole lot of fun.

ITunes is DRMed and expensive. I wouldn't pay two bucks for a TV show, and neither would most people. Apple has always been the company that serves people with more cents than since.

That said, even crappy recodes can be a whole lot of fun.

If you think crappy recodes can be a whole lot of fun, you'll enjoy grabbing a box of popcorn and reading the synopsis of a movie.

All the major networks, and a number of minor networks, have free show downloads (but, you stick to your iTunes). They can sponser them with advertisements and they help prevent people from losing interest in a show (which tends to happen when normal people miss a few episodes). BTW, some of these downloads are in HD, better than Apple's crappy standard VGA resolution.
