Don't get me wrong, I really respect and like Doom9, BUT some of the info and pgs are a bit long in tooth. When I do a search and find a matching item and see that it was posted before Richard Nixon was booted, I kind of disregard its content. Some Help, Pgs and notes are so old they are for pre video I think. My point is, I am having second thoughts about using Doom 9 for much else except friendly gossip. Sorry Boss, but that's the way I feel!

How about contributing some new material. It doesn't just fall out of the sky!

On a slightly off-topic note, I posted something in the news forum, and nobody's OK'd it. What's up?

A normal user like me doesn't have the permission to reply to the News.

no he means he posted news and no-one approved it yet
but it was just approved a little while ago anyways

I know I'd forget to check it on occasion as well, especially with the lul in news at the moment

I know this has been brought up before, but I think Doom9 needs a Wiki. I would contribute what I could.

I've said the same thing
and even offered to host it
so you know where I stand on it

but I see the reasoning behind it
who gets to edit what?
who moderates it?
how HUEG of a hassle is it going turn out to be to set it up
how much bandy/SQL will it use?

I'm afraid Shinigami-Sama is spot on - and there's another problem: I can provide the bandwith just fine with the current setup (but it does eat a lot of bandwidth) - but it cannot be dynamically generated content so there would need to be a way for the wiki to be exported to static content (any of the current server doesn't stand nearly a chance to provide both bandwidth and computing power needed.. if you think the forum server needs a lot or power, the site takes quite a bit more.. and with a wiki, every page would be generated from a DB thus jacking up the CPU and RAM requirements considerably).

However, if you have a solution for these things, I'd gladly make the whole site available as a wiki - I think it would be a great thing to offer the guides for modification so they can be updated where appropriate (my time just has become too sparse to do all the things I used to do).

For me, the Doom9 front page seems to swap back and forth between stuff for 13/11 and some date forward of that ... is it my PC ? Firefox and have cleared the cache etc.

Yes, that is quite common. The site jumps back and forth between the latest update and previous. I think it has something to do with the mirror sites...:(

well there are ways to replicate databases across WANs, but its honestly to much hassle in doing it
I know my server could handle around 15-25% of the required needs before my provider would throttle or disable the SQL access after a short chat with them

but have you considered doing donation drives for a new server?
well... then again that might just put us up a notch on the industries war on consumer rights(tm)(c)(etc...)

How about using a Wiki system that does not require database, like DokuWiki (http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:dokuwiki)? It should probably have lower requirements for system running it and backups etc should be quite straightforward with plain ordinary directory structure it uses.

Just a thought - Wiki would be a nice thing to have. :)

Well I'd love to, but what? I'm not a pg writer or an advanced video manipulator, and it is obvious I cannot send the latest “HOT” versions of professional programs for people to use, so suggest items needed and I’ll see who I know that can supply them. Ideas? I got a million of them, but they don't help!

As previously mentioned, using a wiki that works off files rather than a db backend could work nicely. The other alternative is to pass the hosting off to others. I'm sure there are more than a few people here with server resources to spare. Some sort of round robin DNS setup with behind the scenes replication (easy for file based wikis) could work well. Can you give an indication of the bandwidth the main site uses at the moment (ie, everything but the forums).

The only other issue is that of user authentication. I know it's possible to let mediawiki authenticate users against a vbulletin database (see overclockers.com.au).

EDIT: moderation isn't an issue on a wiki that anyone can edit. Human vandals can be easily reverted by any user, and repeat offenders can be banned by IP by moderators (and it is easy enough to give these permissions)

For the last three weeks, I could only see 11/17 and prior. Today (and this is not an isolated incident) I get all the updates from the last few weeks. Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this, or a work around??

use differnt DNS servers
and flush your DNS cache
one or more of the servers doesn't like being updated

@Shinigami-Sama. Thanks. I figured out how to flush the DNS cache (at command prompt type 'ipconfig /flushdns'), but how do you switch servers?

start > settings > network something or other > nic(Local Area Connection 1) > properties > internet protocol(tcp/ip)

bottom part, primary and secondary DNS servers

I personally have opendns
208.67.220.220
208.67.200.200

You know... I thought the same idea about this site, that a Wiki would provide the content in a more consistent environment (sans vandalism), since all the information would be in one place, instead of now where it could be in three or four (or even more in some cases).

The problem would be in cases where there is still work going on (alpha and beta programs) where you might get edit wars from parties who believe certain things should be said in certain ways.

Obviously, no form of posting the information in a static locale provides an easy solution, it never will, but it is an idea!
