PC shuts down when converting?

For some reason lately when i try to convert things in my divx player ( the divx converter it comes with) my pc starts converting about 4 minutes into it BLAM. My pc just TURNS OFF.

I dont know whats going on? My suspiscion is that maybe my pc is overheating? It only happens with divx and i never had this problem up till about 2 weeks ago.

have done virus and malware etc scans and my pc is clean, and not sure what to think is going on ????

Is my rig overheating ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated i'm baffled and would really like to convert and get rid of some of the stuff on my HD.

Well, only you can answer that, but if your PC is literally shutting down as opposed to crashing and then rebooting, then it's definitely a strong possibility.

As this only started happening in the last two weeks, maybe it's time to open up the case, inspect the fans, and clean out all the dust.

Hi there, well i dont know what to call it when it happens? I can explain what i mean...

see when its humming along then BAM! Its just off. BUT.. when i restart the pc i dont get no system errors or blue screens of death so i dont know if its crashing or not ?

So maybe its over heating and like an emergency shutdown ?? I really dont know i've never encountered something like this before, and it only happens when converting with divx, no other time.

So does that sound like a crash or a system shutdown ???

Sometimes if you have a crook power supply unit this will happen. A cheap 600w power supply is not as good as a good 450W, and in man cases may not be able to provide the rated power! If you're running a 300W/350W power supply I say thats the problem (even if its not thats not a lot of juice).

How do i check my power supply?? I've never done this before..i just got the chords going too my power bar?

I'm not sure if this is it or not cuase i've been converting for months with no problem but i'm willing too definately check out that possibility.

Does anyone here know if speedfan 4.3 is easy too run and doesnt screw up anything? Reason i'm asking is i've tried progs like this before that have screwed with drivers and plugins and all kinds of wonderful things i had to fix lol.

Speed fan is good , it will give you your temp readings of cpu, power supply and hard drives. also it will show the load on your cpu.

i've been converting for months with no problem

I'd go with burfadel and Zach on this one as you did'nt have this problem before.

Yup i talked to a pc shop and its probably either my power or my fans, but i have too wait to bring it in. I would do it myelf but its a laptop and i've never taken one apart before.

I cant believe universal power chord is so expensive :eek: They said around a 100 bones?? Havent looked online but this true?

It's a laptop? Definitely a cooling issue, not a power issue.

@LSDbut i have too wait to bring it inIn the mean time, you might want to experiment by placing the laptop on a platform of some type that leaves the underside exposed to the air (so that there's airflow on all sides of your laptop) - and try doing a video conversion...

You might even try having an external fan blowing directly on the laptop as well.

I always reduce CPU frequency slightly when doing video convertion on my laptop to avoid overheating (I never had overheating problem, but I do this just for the sense of security).

Ah ok! its a laptop! normally if you say PC it refers to a desktop computer, even though a laptop is a type of PC :)

I would have to say its a cooling issue too, and heat is particularly bad for laptops as it damages the battery. Whats your room temperatature like? if its 30C (86F) or above then cooling is the most probably cause. If its a nice 18C (64F) then it could... be something else.

Also, does it just turn off suddenly, or does it shutdown? overheating is usually controlled, with throttling then a controlled standby/shutdown, not a sudden turn off.

hey guys :) thx for all the responses this is the 1st time i've had a chance to get back here.

Well what happens when it shuts or crashes is i just here a CLICK, then thats it, its instantly off.

I dont get no errors when i restart so it doesnt seem to be a crash but i could be wrong???? Wouldnt i get errors if it was a crash?

I havent cleaned out the fans.. i have to wait too do that i'd do it myself but i've never done it on a laptop before, and the room is quite warm, but it only start happening a few weeks ago but i'll see what happens here :)

I will try elevating the pc or whatnot and seeing what happens. i'm going to open it up and clean out all the dust ASAP as soon as someone can show me properly how to do it and go from there.

If it was a power problem which most think it isnt now.. but just saying.. wouldnt the battery kick in if it was a power issue? Just a question?

Oh btw..i know this is going to sound really dumb lol, but where would i point the fan to keep'er cool? I know where the air blows out but i dont see where it takes it in unless its on the bottomside of it? So not sure where i'd try the fan if its underneath?

Hey guys. well i found out what the problem is thx to your suggestions. Its over-heating. I put it up on some old gameboy cartridges to give it a little bit of breathing room underneath and everything seems to be working great! Really appreciate all guys help!

I know this may sound like a petty question but i re installed VLC and all my divx files look like frikn road pilons now, and i cant figure how how to change it back so they just look like they used too.. anyone know?lol

Its over-heating. I put it up on some old gameboy cartridges to give it a little bit of breathing room underneath and everything seems to be working great!Glad to hear that the suggestion to leave the underside exposed to airflow resolved your dilemma ;>}

Yes thankyou very much :) i didnt have time to scroll up and PM who mentioned that but i thankyou very much.

Best use my gameboy cartridges had had in about 15 years lol.

I wiped the underside of it but i think i still need to clean it out. See what happens. BUT at least i KNOW what the problem is now.. not just guessing and shooting in the dark.

ps if anyone knows about those pilons etc i know its stupid but its annoying the h3ll out of me lol.
