I realize hydrogen audio would prolly be a better place to ask
and I realize I could just re-rip my CDs to wav and do it that way but its far to much work for little gain

so
is there a way I can re-normalize my mp3s so one isn't twice as loud as another, and so on and so forth?
I'm not CLI shy so thats not a problem
I've been poking around a few tools and either I'm an idiot and missed it(which is prolly the case) or I havn't been looking in the right spots for

replaygain looks promising but many(or all, not sure) of my tracks don't have it, nor have I really figured out how to retro-actively add it

I'd rather not re-encode them but if its the only option I will
I do have a sabayon box if its easier on linux as well

Use foobar2000 to add ReplayGain tags (can either select by album or track, album is probably better for consistancy).

Normalising the audio would not be ideal since it would reduce the quality, and also since it is done for each track then the option of having all tracks in an album the same volume level would not be an option.

To add ReplayGain to tracks in foobar200, right-click on them and select ReplayGain >> a ReplayGain option. If you have selected only MP3 files then you should just be able to select "Apply Album ReplayGain to MP3 Data" (or Track ReplayGain).

Cheers, Arite.

not to keen on foobar, I've heard bad things about it and tags, are the replaygain tags it uses compatable with winamp's replaygain functionality?

Hi!

If I remember correctly, GoldWave has both batch processing and normalizing capability...

to my knowlage that re-encodes it, I'd prefer not to re-encode, but I'm looking at it

Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.

Just thought you should know. You may also want to check out ReplayGain.

mp3gain does not reencode, similar functionality is built into foobar.
