Just out of curiosity, guys:
If you strip an average standard Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD disk down to just the main movie (with single language audio track) leaving out all the extras, how big would it approximately be in gigabytes, provided that the film itself is roughly140 min long (to be safe), originally H.264 encoded, and that you store it as is i.e. without using any re-encoding/re-compression at all?
Would 10GB be an accurate estimate?
Thank you.

More like 20Gb. Some Blu-Rays I've seen have come in at around 40Gb, but that's because of the lazy mpeg2 encoding.

Wow. Just the main movie that big? I'm assuming that HD content encoded in mpeg2 and kept under max allowed bit rate wouldn't look the best, ha? At least it would be inferior to h.264 encoding at the same bit rate. Does this concern just the earlier disks, or the recent ones also? Do you see this among big Hollywood releases too?

My AKB48 Blu-Rays, which are barebones with a minimalist menu system and basically no extras, come in at 45GB each. These use Mpeg2 @ ~39MBit, 1080i (not p). So yeah, the Mpeg2 ones are huge, but the Mpeg2 ones on BD50's are scary.

I have two in Mpeg2 - Enemy of the State and Kingdom of Heaven. They don't really look any different from the others quality-wise, but that's just because they take up a lot more space.
I tried converting using Nero Recode, but it was going to take 80 hours even on my 2.4Ghz Core2Duo, so I cancelled.
