View Full Version : How to use DVD Rebuilder?

Hi all,
I have purchased the Pro Edition of DVD Rebuilder and I am at a loss as to what it is and how to use it.
When I purchased it I thought it was one of those "click one button and it will copy a DVD movie to a blank DVD."
I tried doing that and it seemed like it was taking forever and when it seemed to be done I received an error message. I can't remember what it was because when I tried to post this question I couldn't because of the 5 day thing.
Then I thought maybe it was something to use after I ripped a movie and then I would run Rebuilder and it would make the ripped movie better quality.
So, I need someone to tell me in plain English what DVD Rebuilder is and how to use it? I looked at several posts and the jargon is very very confusing to me.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

I followed those links but I am still confused. I am looking for answers to these questions:
If I put a commercial DVD (that I own) into my computer, then put a blank DVD into the DVD writer and click on Backup, will DVD Rebuilder copy it from the orginal to the blank DVD?
Does DVD Rebiuilder "compress" a DVD to fit a larger DVD to a smaller DVD? In other words, most movies need to be shrunk to fit on a blank DVD... does DVD Rebuilder do that?
When I installed DVD Rebuilder Pro Edition, did, by double-clicking on the installer, did it install ALL the files I need to make it work? Some of the questions and answers were asked and answered in the year 2001.
Hope someone can answer these questions...

No, DVD Rebuilder doesn't remove copy protection. Correction: Unless you have AnyDVD running in the background.

Yes, DVD Rebuilder can compress to fit on a DVD-5.

Yes.

OK, I have AnyDVD installed so I am good with that.
I have DVD Rebuilder Pro running and doing it's thing.
After a while there was a message saying:
No CCE Path has been set. Use menu, options setup to configure.
I did that and when I clicked on settings I was presented with a pretty intimidating screen but I found the CCE line which was blank, I clicked on the folder and the only thing I could find was "EclPro." Was that the correct choice? If not where do I finds the CCE file?

CCE and Procoder are commercial encoders. HCenc is free and comes with DVD Rebuilder.

rack04,
Ok good.... they come free with DVD Rebuilder...... where are they located? Are they installed when you install DVD Rebuilder Pro? If so, where are they so I can point the program to it/them? If they are not a part of the installer then where can I find them?
Thanks.........

FYI: CCE SP is $1,950.00 and Procoder 3 is $500. So no they are not free with DVD Rebuilder.
CCE and Procoder are not installed by DVD Rebuilder. When you install DVD Rebuilder it attempts to locate these commercial encoders and if it finds them it sents the path in the settings. HCenc is installed and the path is set when you installed DVD Rebuilder. IMO, HCenc is better than both CCE and Procoder in terms of quality and price.

DVD Rebuilder is still asking me for the path to the CCE but since I don't have such a thing on my machine and if I do I don't know where it is so I can map a path to it in the "General Settings" of the program, then the program is useless to me and I have wasted $29.95.
So thanks to all that tried to help......

You have to select HC to be the default encoder in the menu. If you are getting a CCE path message, you have the encoder set to CCE.
Since you don't have CCE you leave the path box empty.
rbaron

OK, I keep getting the Encoder can't be found and that the path may not be set correctly. Here is a screen shot of the setup screen. Notice the HC Encoder spot. Is that right?
http://www.richb.com/GenSetUp.jpg
Now, under the Mode Menu I have the HC Encoder checked.
Under the Settings menu and the CCE flyout menu you can see that the CCE Basic has a check next to it. I can only check the items that are not grayed out AND I can't de-select it. See here
http://www.richb.com/CCE_Screen.jpg
So with HC checked under the Mode menu and based on the above items, what am I doing wrong and why am I getting these errors?

Are you 100% sure HC Mode is checked in the mode menu?
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a199/rack04/untitled-1.jpg
You DON'T have CCE. Therefore all the settings your referring too are worthless.

Yes, I am 100% sure that HC is checked in the "Mode Menu."
But have another look at the setup screen and tell me if the HC Encoder I have created a path to is correct?

Using the Help | Display Versions shows that the HC is installed and that I am telling the program to use HC.
"rack04" Can you post a screenshot of your "Settings | Setup" screen for me so I can see how you have your paths setup? I really would appreciate it.
Thanks.......
P.S.: Maybe I should reinstall???

Can't post a screenshot since I'm at work but it probably wouldn't help because since my setup is custom. Open windows explorer and verify that HC Enc is at the path. If not set the correct path.

When pullind down the Help |Display Versions I get this:

I was just curious as to your settings to compare with mine but as you said you have a custom setup.
I just tried it again making sure HC is selected under the mode menu and it was. The error I got was the same:
"Failed to find and run Encoder. The path may be incorrect. Aborted."
Agggggg aggravating............

OK, I reinstalled DVD Rebuilder and started the process making sure that the HC Encoder was picked. The process went way past the point where before it would give me the "encoder error." I was very happy because I thought it was fixed.
After a long while I received a "run time" error. So I stopped for the night and see if I can get it to work making sure the computer did not sleep and no activity other then DVD-Rebuilder was running.
I tried this morning and AGAIN I am getting the "Failed to find and run encoder. The path may be incorrect. Aborted." When I clicked on the OK button I received this message: Run time error '52': bad file name or number.
Anyone else have any ideas? Is there a way to "compleatlly" uninstall DVD Rebuilder AND everything that it installs and start over?
I don't know if I mentioned it but I am trying to get this to run under "Vista." Maybe that's the problem.
Help.....

Yes, I am running it as an Administrator. After reboot of system it made it to Segment 107. Then it reads Stills for VTS_03 Segment 108 Phase II Encoding completed in 175minutes. Then the error message "Runtime error '52' Bad file name or number.
Where is the "sub" forum. I see Subtitles but no DVD Rebuilder Sub.... Any suggestions on the latest advancement/failure shown above?

Hi!
Runtime errors are usually indicative of a corrupt or illegally hacked ".DLL" file...
Video Dude

A DVD-RB runtime 52 error usually indicates there is a problem with the source or working path.

So let me get this right. Here is how I understand DVD Rebuilder to work:
1. Put a DVD movie into the drive.
2. Put a blank DVD in the recorder
3. Launch DVD Rebuilder
4. Choose the target (the DVD from step 1)
5. Choose working path. (Place on drive for files to be processed)
6. Choose destination (the blank DVD from step 2)
7. Choose the HC encoder
8. Click the button to start.
9. The program does it's thing and after a bit of a wait the DVD from step 1 is now copied to the blank dvd in step 2.
10. Take it to the dvd player, pop some corn and watch what DVD Rebuilder has created.
Is that correct? I mean that is the process right? Because if it is then I am doing it right and something else is not set up right and that's why it does not work.
Still trying to get it to work...... and thanks for all the help.

Once you do the re-install and get everything working, you may want to consider updating AVISynth and HCencoder to the latest versions - I think AVISynth now stands at 2.5.7, and HCencoder at 0.22. I am no expert, but just got Pro yesterday as I liked the quality I experienced running the free version, installed, updated and ran with no problems. One thing I do different than you however is I rip the DVD files to hard disk BEFORE I use DVD-RB, using AnyDVD Ripper, or DVDFab.
I don't mean to put the cart before the horse here - no updating is going to fix your problems. Make it work from the installer edition and update at your own peril.

I will try ripping the DVD to the hard drive. I do have Anydvd installed so the encrypted dvd's are fine to rip.
I'll let you guy's know how it turned out when I rip to hard drive.

If you have UAC enabled on Vista (those prompts that say "Windows needs your permission to ...") you might want to try running DVD-RB as administrator (right click, run as Administrator). Or reinstall it avoiding the Program Files or Windows directory. With UAC those directories are protected and MS has some kludgy hacks in place to make most apps work.

I ripped the DVD to the desktop using DVDFab Plat 4. I started DVD Rebuilder and choose the VIDEO_TS file as my source and a blank DVD as the destination.
When I clicked on Backup I received a message saying that the input directory is already small enough to fit on a DBD-5. No compression necessary.
Is that what is suppose to happen?
Thanks.........

You shouldn't be setting the destination as the Blank DVD. Choose a destination on your hard drive and check "burn to disk".
If the DVD you ripped is already small enough to fit a DVD-5 then yes you will get that messege.

If it is correct I do not seem to find that "burn to disk" in ANY of the drop down menus which will tell DVD Rebuilder to do that.

I just want to say thanks to all that have tried to help me with DVD Rebuilder. I just flat ass can't get it to work. I don't know what I am doing wrong, or a bad install or encoders that may or may not be there.
I have tried and tried to get it to work but I constantlly get errors. soooooo,
I am giving up the quest. The money I paid for the pro version is wasted for me. Maybe one day I can revisit DVD Rebuilder Pro and it will be easier to use and the whatever bugs for me at least will be worked out.
Thanks again.......

Rbaron - I know you have spent a lot of time, but it appears that you are so close .... I am sure that you are only missing some basic understanding at this point.
To use DVD-RB properly, you need to be working with unprotected content - so you need another program to rip a protected DVD that you own to your hard disk, and you have a lot of choices, but beware that DVD Fab just issued a new beta with an option to help it work better with DVD-RB.
Now that you have ripped, you should look at the DVD files, and determine how much space they take - if it is under 4.7 GB, then a DVD-5 will work with no added compression, so all you need to do is burn it, say with ImgBurn (a free program that you simply must have as it integrates with DVD-RB very well).
If you find that the files are too large for a DVD-5 (originally a dual layer disk), then compression of one sort or another is in order for you to make a complete backup - you have the option to use the movie only and fit that on a DVD-5 without compression if you prefer to do that. The other option is to use a DVD-9 with ImgBurn to get the whole disk - again without compression.
Last step - you decide you want to compress to get everything you want onto DVD-5. DVD-RB has 3 steps (and you can simplify your life using one-click mode). Prepare - a quick step after which you can preview the titlesets and adjust bitrates if you desire, or blank appropriate ones. Encode - takes time to compress the files that you just selected, and Rebuild - making the DVD automatically firing up ImgBurn if you have that program installed and set DVD-RB to use it. When I first started, I used one-click mode, letting DVD-RB decide everything for me. Make sure that you have a blank disk in your burner and go.
And to anyone else who reads this - as I am relatively new to this, comments or corrections may be in order.

Here's a guide for new users (freeware edition)
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=55302
@rbaron - it might be easier to do things in stages. Output your project to your hard drive - either as files or an ISO (see the Mode menu for choices). Then use you favourite burning program to burn it to a blank DVD.
Any problems, post a log.

I do want to work with DVD Rebuilder but I can't for the life of me get it to work.
I reinstalled it and then tried it but got errors.
I have HC Encoder checked under the mode menu and I put a check by Output to ISO Image File. I have the "Source" set on the DVD Movie, the destination is set to the desktop, and the work path set to the hard drive, in my case I have an additional drive named the "V" drive because I am running Vista and that is where DVD Rebuilder is installed.
So at the end of what it was doing I received this error:
"Failed to find and run encoder. The path may be incorrect." When I clicked the button to continue I got "There is nothing to do! DVD Rebuilder couldn't locate appropriate files in working directory! You must PREPARE and ENCODE first! Aborting."
Here is the log:

From the menu, go to Settings --> Setup and check that the path to HC is correct. Remember HC is called HCbatch.exe
Post your INI file (it is in the same folder as you installed DVDRB).

Well I am not sure what I did exactlly but it worked!!! I set the program to copy the files to the desktop and after 221 minutes the files were there ready for burning to a blank DVD.
Just a few more questions:
Do you use DVD Rebuilder to rip a DVD to a place on your hard drive or another program to rip and then run DVD Rebuilder to "reprocess" the files?
If the above is true then you still need a program to burn the files to a DVD correct?
How do others here in this forum do it?
Thanks to all that helped....
