Long time reader.....
I have been converting my HD DVD's to WMV HD files for a while now and have had good success. The process I have used is
Demux
Convert the ddp audio with eac3to.exe to a wav file
Tranzcode to 6 mono wav files
Use wavavimux to to create an audio only avi file
modified wmcmd.exe to create the wmv hd file
This has worked great!!!!
I have now been trying to convert MKV files to WMV-HD but have been having a problem with the sound. My process is as follows
Demux
Tranzcode the ac3 file to mono wav's
Use wavavimux to to create an audio only avi file
The resulting AVI file is full of static but you can hear the multichannel audio within the static.
I have searched the forum extensively but have been unable to figure this out. The video portion does not seem to be a problem. My issue is keeping the 5.1 sound.
It is worth noting that the final file must be in WMA pro for playback on the 360. Using the method described above is working great for HD DVD's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Why not just rip from your original HD-DVD? Its probably much easier than transcoding the MKV.

Unfortunately, I do not have access to the original HD DVD file.

Rule 6, rule 6 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).
I am not asking how to process any illegal information/files. I am simply asking for help in converting an MKV to WMV-HD.
I didn't think what I am converting is relevant. The content is the first NHL game my brother played in. It was recorded by my friend who has the ability to record HD OTA feeds.
Unfortunately, he provided it to me in .MKV and has since deleted the original recording.
Is anyone able to help now?

I hate to ask the obvious question but does the source AC3 audio on the .mkv have static in the audio as well? I use the method you described and I have never had a problem converting a .mkv to .wmv. The first thing I might try is making sure all my ac3 codecs are installed and working correctly. Good luck.:D

The original ac3 file is definitely good. When I put the file to 6 seperate wav's and play them back individually, they still sound good. It seems only after running wavavimux is the static introduced.
I thought that perhaps it could be a codec problem. I tried running wavavimux on another computer with the same result. Is there a certain codec that I should be using? Is so, how do I check which codec's I have installed?
