Has anyone here had a play with this new technology yet?
http://silverlight.net
I have just been given VS2008 that has this incorporated into it. Wondering what people thought of it before playing with it.

no... ;)
but to be honest, i dont see any point in silverlight - what advantages will it deliver over current flash implementations?
as with Adobe's latest Flash 9 plugin it is now possible to play h.264 video and HE-AAC audio, what else does anyone want?
ok, competition is always good - but I can't see any USP for silverlight (vs. flash).
and as I said - even h.264 video and HE-AAC audio is now possible with flash - u just need the latest RC flash plugin from adobe...
info (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer9/) and download (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html)
and on top of it all...
the latest - free - FLV PLAYER by Jeroen Wijering (http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player) can play *.mp4 files (and not only *.flv) with this latest flash plugin by adobe - in other words... u don't need Adobe's Media Player prerelease for it ;)
sorry for hijacking your thread

Tech wise MS does everything .NET related right, there will be a dynamic VB version that can probably be used to script desktop applications too, the designer Blend looks also very cool.
I doubt however Silverlight will be a very successful for political reasons and I don't care much since I'm not into web tech. What's currently used seem to work good enough and with the competition of Silverlight will now probably improve much faster.

Where Silverlight wins is (finally) making WMV9 / VC-1 multi-platform in browsers, something which has been missing for a while.

the only thing I see silverlight doing is pushing adobe to actually make some improvements, which I doubt will happen anyways
has adobe ever made anything with decent speeds?

hehe hey but they allready improved the rendering speed and CPU utilization and if H.264 hardware accelleration comes soon their up to Silverlight then (Video wise).
Tough i must have to say i like Silverlight more, because it's newer and still faster :D and Linux support is there through Moonlight, now if H.264 support comes i would prefer it 100% over Adobes Flash ;)

no shit
but its not hard to increase speed in something as slow as molasses anyways
when a simple 640:480 low motion platform flash game can bring an amd3500+ to 100% load with ease....
but I do agree
if silverlight does get its act together fast enough they might be able to overtake adobe, or if they make licensing not cost an arm a leg both testicles and first second and third born...
but I doubt its ganna happen, I'll be glad if it does though

Siverlight is completely based on OPEN standarts (like CLR/XML/WPF) - it's main!

based on, doesn't mean much if they put a bunch of proprietary stuff in it too
