Non-square WM9 for web delivery

I have PAL SD non-square source. Can anybody explain the advantages and/or implications of transcoding that to non-square WM9 (at a slightly reduced frame size) for delivery via the web for PC only playback?
I've always stuck to the advice of Ben W when he said to code to square pixels when targeting square pixel (PC) displays.

Square-pixel encoding is slightly more efficient overall. WMP 9+ does just fine with non-square pixel encoding. The main times I use it is if

A) I have enough bits to encode all the sources pixels. If I've got 720x480 4:3, might as well encode it at that instead of 640x480.

B) Trying to save some bits on interlaced content. 480i can be encoded at 480x480 in lower bandwidth situations.
