I am using Handbrake .9.1 and have found one scene with very obvious problems with using CQ (Spirited Away Chapter 12). Things break up horribly when using CQ (I've tried up to 80%) at one specific point (lots of animated smoke and motion) but stay quite nice when using CBR (even at low bitrates). If I gave an exact time would this be helpful for someone doing codec development?

I like the idea of CQ much more than CBR but it requires a level of trust that I don't quite have yet.

If you can give the exact x264 commandline you're using, the exact version of x264 you're using, and a short clip of the source that is being problematic, I can try to help.

How about using CRF (http://handbrake.m0k.org/trac/wiki/CRFGuide) instead of CQ(P)? It should be better overall. I'm not sure how CBR would be able to give decent results in complex scenes though. Are you sure you weren't using two-pass ABR instead?

Note that to get the information Shikari needs, you should go to the Query tab and copy the generated query here.

To get a chunk of the source, use dgindex.

Are you using a preset? HB has a preset just for CRF, called "Constant Quality Rate." It's based off one of MEGui's CRF profiles.

It uses a rate factor of 18 and the following options: ref=3:mixed-refs:bframes=3:b-pyramid:b-rdo:bime:weightb:filter=-2,-1:subme=6:trellis=1:analyse=all:8x8dct:me=umh

And if you're on Windows, remember to check that CRF box (it defaults to enabled in OS X).

If you can give ... the exact version of x264 you're using ...

HandBrake currently uses x264 rev 665.
