I've been trying to archive some shows from my DirecTV DVR. It's not easy. I copy them to a DVD recorder, then rip to the PC. I've been trying to do this with VirtualDub. VirtualDubMod will let me select the .vob files from the DVD & edit out the commercials but it won't let me append the rest of the program split across several .vob files. I can do them separately, then use VirtualDubMod to append the .avi's. Is there a way to do this in one step? Is there a better tool to use than VirtualDubMod? Thanks.

There are many tools, such as Cuttermaran or ChopperXP, that will let you edit the .VOB files without re-encoding at that point. There are older softwares, such as Vidomi, that will do it in one step.

Hi!Is there a way to do this in one step?You can use ("standard") VirtualDub v.1.7.6 together with the recently available MPEG-2 plugin (Put it into a "Plugins32" sub-folder that you put into the VirtualDub folder)by "fcchandler". It will allow you to load the .VOBs sequentially, so that they are then joined in VirtualDub.

Thanks for the adivce, but It's not working for me.
I DL'ed v1.7.6 and and the MPEG-2 plugin into a plugins32 subdirectory. When I open the .vob the dialouge box says it's MPEG-2 plugin by fccHandler, but "append AVI segment" is greyed out. Am I doing it wrong?

Yes, you're doing it wrong ;>}

The idea is to join the MPEG-2 files that you are loading in, NOT .AVI files.

I guess when you read everything in the thread I gave you a link to, you missed the following:I've added an experimental feature which allows you to open multiple MPEG files, which are joined together virtually by the plugin. To use this feature, check the "Ask for extended options after this dialog" checkbox when you select an MPEG file.

You can use DVD Shrink to rip DVD to vob, and then convert it to avi with SUPER, they are both free

hope it helps

Free, but SUPER dumps a hidden and messy codec pack on your system (and reactivates it every time you run it, even if you remove it). There are other programs very similar to it, like MediaCoder, that do just as well without the junk. It doesn't remotely help with the problem this thread is about, anyway.
