Winamp classic, WMA, and Vista

Hi all,

If this is the wrong place to ask/shouldn't be asked, then I have no qualms if this thread disappears :)

Anyway. As the title suggests, I'm trying to mix together those three ingredients; A base of Vista Ultimate, a scoop of Winamp 2.xx, and a dash of WMA files.

Problem!

WMA files won't play. WA just skips to the next playable file. When I go into the preferences and check the WMA plugin, it's listed as
"Microsoft WINAMP/WMA plug-in [NO CODEC INSTALLED]"

I don't suppose anyone has encountered this and fixed it? Or any suggestions to fix it? Is WA looking to the wrong directory for the WMA DLL?

I'd prefer to avoid WA 5.xx (Bloatware makes me sad) or another player (WA classic is my favourite). And unfortunately, I have lots and lots of songs in WMA format.

Winamp 5 is bloatware?

/right clicks/properties on the Winamp folder, minus the plugins/skins

2.5 megabytes is bloatware? Considering you're using Vista, you shouldn't be complaining... :D

You could see if there's any downloadable WMA plugin for Winamp, but odds are you might have to upgrade.

That small? I'm going to have to have another look at the installer (Cutting almost everything out left me with a 9mb install).

Well get winamp5.5 and uncheck the stuff you will not use during installation, or maybe get winamp lite.

AOL bought Wimamp and ruined the product....

Version 2.81 is near the last good version left i hear (From the original company (Before AOL bought them))

It's great to hear things, it's another thing to actually use it, y'know? Winamp hasn't felt 'bloated' since at least 5.2, maybe even 5.1 (wasn't very stable before that), as long as you don't go overboard. Same with foobar (replace 5.1 with 0.6).

Want a media library? That's going to cost you something. Want modern skins in trippy shapes? That's going to cost you. Want 5,000 visualizations? Cost you too. You get to pick or leave your "bloat", the install is large but doesn't make you keep it all. It makes me sad when people avoid software over rumors like that in 2007.

Anyway, the other thing you always needed was the microsoft WMA redistributable package, that came with the old full versions of winamp. If you just copied the folder over you'll need to get that package again, assuming it works in vista at all.

Maybe some people just recognize "I accept" and "next" in the installers.

I have a full WinAmp install and its about 71 MB, 64 and change of which is plug-ins. The main Winamp directory 2.99 MB. hardly bloated to me.

You can manually remove the plugins not used. As long as development continues, it's hard to avoid being filled with more advanced features. The folder size can be reduced up to below 5 MB. :)

I'll admit, my last foray into the 5.x world of Winamp was quite a while back, and I'd been unimpressed (Felt sluggish, bloated and annoying, and this was after trimming unnecessary items at install time - Though this could've been partly due to the system I was trying it on, but on the other hand, WA2.x ran well on that same system).

Whacked 5.5 on today, cut out most of the crap (Only could get the installer down to 9ish megs. I'll live ;P), put on my oldtime favourite skin, and am satisfied. Feel like a bit of a prat for avoiding trying out a new version because of bad experience with a previous one.

@Sharktooth: I would if I could, but I doubt Win98se would install on my laptop ;)

Isn't that the platform WinAmp 2.XXX was written for?

I read the forum rules and they don't mention anything about old posts...
I found this one after a Google search and just registered (and waited 5 days) to post this solution, which may help others on the same situation :)
Just like the original poster, I just love Winamp 2.95. It works properly for all I need, and it's very fast... unlike newer versions.
Here is the solution to play WMA files and streams under Vista/7: http://www.mediafire.com/?zu1t8x3zc4zgm97
Extract to Winamp folder, overwriting in_wm.dll if it asks to and that's it.
It will even play ASX streams with no problems :)

hi all. i have used winamp 2.9 with win7ult and had the same problem with wma. i tried Marton79 method but it's not worked for me. winamp started with error:
"the programm can't start because DRMClien.DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the programm to fix this problem."
but now i think that is does not make sense.

they says: "If you'd like Winamp 5.08d full to run as sharply and as quickly as any older unsupported 2.xx version did, then you have the ability to UNcheck certain components during the setup process..." & all work without 'hemorrhoid'.
