wav/avi problem

I have recorded several TV episodes using the ATI TV Wonder in .mp2 format, but, owing to the size of the files (~1.8 GB per 30 minutes), I can't keep too many of these episodes on my computer at the same time. I used FlaskMpeg to convert the .mp2 file to an .avi using the direct stream copy audio mode, and ended up with a 176 MB .avi file and a 49 MB .mp2 audio file. I then used Winamp's Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in to convert the new .mp2 file to .wav format, creating a 330 MB .wav file. I tried using AviUtl v.0.96i to merge the video and audio files, but the program claimed that it "Cannot open this file." I got a similar result when I used AVIedit. Did I do something completely wrong, or there a simple error I overlooked?

well most you done is right i think ( except i dont use any of the tool you use ...), but i think i can help you:
with the 330 mb wav file , if you are planning to do an avi ( and playing it on your computer), you could compress it to mp3
( using lame -h name_of_file.wav destfile.mp3 or any mp3 compressor)
then you could get a wav headed mp3 with wavemp3.exe ( check doom9 site)
and mix the wav in the avi you already have with virtual dub,
using direct stream copy for audio AND video and saving to a new file.
But in the future, you could perhaps try to load your raw file with vdub, save the wave ( using the function) and in full processing mode ( it means you ll get directly your wav of 330 mb)
And to this wav apply the mp3 compression as i explained.
and for the video stream Or you choose to stay with flaskmpeg ( which i dont like personnaly), or you choose to encode with virtual dub ( using a divx codec ( 3.11 or 4.1X - the one who prefer) and setting the same bitrate you choosen with flaskmpeg
and encoding the video in full processing mode ( select noSound for the audio since you ll do it separately)
(...) and mix the avi and the wav headed in one file containing audio & video
