Trouble with .mkv files

Have gotten in some trouble getting 720/mkv files to play properly on my HTPC. It lags, stops and then continues all the time (the sound continues).

I had it working on a P4 2.5/533mhz bus & 512Mb RAM. The motherboard broke so i had to buy new. So i bought a P4 3.2Ghz/800Mhz bus + motherboard and use same memory chips.

I also have another P4 2.8/800 with 1gig memory which plays
720/mkv files perfectly.

Now with this new faster hardware i can't get 720p/mkv files to play smoothly.

I use the same codecs and player (mediaplayer classic)
the same filters is used what i can tell:

Default directsound
video renderer
audio switcher
ffdshow video decoder
DTS or AC3 decoder (depending on audio)

and i have checked all settings in MPC and can't find the fault.

I have also tried CoreAVC decoder, but that wont help either.

At first i had no DirectX installed, then i tried with dx9.

On my everyday pc i have no idea.. can't remember if i have it installed (i play no games). But mkv work on that machine.

Both are XP Pro. In the HTPC i have never installed any servicepacks, and not now.

I tried some more now, tried CCP codecpack, but same with that. I get around 15-20fps in MPC with CCP (60% cpu load).
Internal MPC codecs fps goes up and down/stops.
CoreAVC codecs is also fps up and down...

Have you recently updated your graphics driver or chipset driver? If so, you should try downgrading, if not, try upgrading. (Sounds like a doctor's advice.) You might check the audio driver just in case, as well. Make sure that both are set to use the Overlay renderer, since VMR9 is much slower, and that no ffdshow filters are active.

Your 1.4 system probably just isn't capable of handling AVC video at all, sorry, and the 2.8 (with HT, I bet, which is why the CPU use is all weird) is really close to the edge even with CoreAVC. Any small change can tip it into not working.

??? i have no 1.4 system, read please. It worked on a 2.5Ghz, now it is 3.2Ghz and not working.

Frame rate issues are generally codec related so if you can post your ffdshow version it may help.

But if you can either install Haali Matroska Splitter (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Haali_Matroska_Splitter.htm)or confirm it is already running as it may be a problem with the way your MPC is opening the streams from within the mkv container. Haali will show up in the taskbar when you open a mkv file if it is running.

I used to have problems with MKVs, CCCP works well with them, just remember to update to DX9.0C
failing that I'd go with the above advice and install a newer halii splitter
