Pardon my ignorance on this... but it's been 2-3 years since I last looked into DVD Backup solutions. In the past, I've used InstantCopy. I figured after so many years though, something new must have come out. I'm looking for a list of various solutions (or combinations of solutions) and perhaps a review or comparison of them.

Is there such a list out there? I've been looking around but I can't find one. From the forums, it looks like lots of people use RipIt4Me & DVD Shrink... but I'm curious how those compare with other solutions (e.g. DVDFab for decrypting).

I'm really just looking for something that can do the standard: take a DVD-9, allow me to strip extras I don't want (or to keep them if I want), subtitles, audio, etc. and compress it onto a standard DVD-R disk with decent/good quality. Very normal stuff. But it would be nice if I could keep menus (even if some of them don't work cause I take out those extras.. but sometimes I manually add extras in that I care for and would like a menu to select them)

I've looked at the sticky on this forum, but it was written in 2003 and seems a little dated. And not much information on each tool. All the guides in the Doom9 forum have 2003-2005 dates too, nothing really recent.

Because if something does exist already, in the interest of time, it makes much more sense to just read up on it. Every dvd I backup doesn't really happen instantly...

I'm actually trying DVD Shrink out right now... I have no idea how fast/slow it is, but we'll see. Although I tried something where I re-authored the DVD, cut out the credits in 1, and added credits in another at a lower compression.. so I still have credits but they're compressed differently. We'll see how it turns out, haha.

Although the guide telling me that I can't keep my menus if I want to take out extras made me a bit sad. But then I read the guide on full backup and realized you can just replace an extra with a still image?! That's practically the same thing in my book.. lets just see if it comes out the way I envision it.

There's anumber of programs out there, some free, some not. Some are transcoding solutions, some re-encode.

It really is each to his own (and that is why we have rule 12). I strongly prefer DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/) (which has a freeware version and professional version) but others might go for DVD Shrink (freeware), or commercial alternatives such as Ner0 Recode, DVD2One (which is probably the fastest transcoder) or DVD95Copy (which has a ripping solution built in).

As far as DVD Shrink's still image function, it will eliminate the unwanted extra, but will not reclaim all the space (as the still takes up some room and plays for the length of the extra). To do this, you need to blank the unwanted stuff - use VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm) or DVD Remake Pro (http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremakepro/index.php) for this.

As neuron2 says, give them a try and see which fits best.

And search around - this info has been given many times before.

I suggest trying Dvd95copy,it is very flexible in removing unwanted extras and keeping menus.

I just had to comment on this. I have been a member of this forum in the past but have not needed it for some time. Lost my password :p

One thing has changed over the years. The cost of dual layer DVDRs is much lower.

Because of this I no longer compress movies. It is simpler user to use "Free DVDfab decypter" (movie only mode) to rip and use Imgburn to put on DVDR. Half the movies fit on single layer DVDRs. The others use a dual layer.

The balance of cost difference between dual discs versus single layer with time spent compressing has changed over the past 2 years.

I found compressed movies looked almost perfect at 32" or less but at 50", you need original quality.
