Hello, on this forum i read nice words about DVD-RB, so i decide to try it. My goal is back-up of my collection Lord of the Rings movies. I used DVD-RB free 0.98.2 with default settings + HC best profile (compression was 60%).
Result was really very good, let say 95-99% was almost identical to the original, but problem is rest of the movies where was really scenes with blockyness. I noticed that bitrate is too much reduced on this scenes.
After that i repeat encoding but with one change (bias set to 60). Scenes with blockyness was good now, but now scenes that require higher bitrate can't get it because bias is set high.
Now i'm really in doubt what is solution, i can use DVD Shrink but i want to use DVD-RB, because result is better with DVD-RB except that few scenes with blockyness.
Thanks in advance for your answers, and sorry for my english.

Are there scenes in the 2nd try (with bias 60) that are blocky now that weren't blocky in the 1st try (with default bias)?

Are you saying that there are scenes that are blocky in the DVD-RB version that aren't in the DVD Shrink version?
The Lord of the Rings movies are particularly tricky for DVD backup, simply because they're much longer than the average movie. The Bitrate Redistribution option in the PRO version might help, but that doesn't solve your problem with 0.98.2.

Yes, you are right. In second try (60 bias) scenes that require higher bitrate now is blocky, and was OK in first try.

Yes, you are again right. That is most surprised for me. DVD-RB is better almost for entire film, but problem is that few scenes and that scenes in DVD Shrink were OK.

You could try some very slight denoising. Try using TemporalSoften(2,3,3,8,2) in the Filter Editor.
FYI, I would use bias 0.

Rogi is using DVD-RB Free, so he doesn't have access to the filter editor. Rogi, you might look into robot1's RB-Opt if you're really interested in using filters. But to point out the obvious, you'd doubtless have the best luck with the registered version of DVD-RB, which would afford you the filter editor, preview window/editor, bitrate redistribution, etc.

That's wrong, the filter editor is also available in DVD-RB free.

Ah -- my apologies! Haven't used free in a while (i.e. a couple years!).

I used DVDRB on the LOTR series with good results using HCEnc and bitrate distribution, but the latter is only part of the Pro package I think. Justification for investment, if you need it.
Unless you are using a home cinema amplifier, I suggest you look at the alternative soundtracks on the original DVD. The PAL UK versions have a Dolby Stereo track that takes up far less space than the 5.1 soundtracks, leaving more space for DVDRB to play with.
